Gallup, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. It is located on the banks of the Rio Grande, about 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of Albuquerque and 15 miles (24 km) east-east of Gallup. As of the 2010 census, its population was 594.
The first coffee farm in Gallup was established by José Antonio Peralta in 1844. The first coffee beans were grown from acorns that had been gathered near Tomaquilla Springs in 1838. In 1916, Dr. Alfredo Garcia bought land at what is now known as Gate Road and began to grow coffeebeans on it. This became one of the largest bean farms in New Mexico and produced more than 2 million pounds (1 kg) of coffee per year until his death in 1957.
In 1965, Donny Andres founded Rincon Coffee Company with a single acre (0.8 hectare) lot along Gate Road for roasting and marketing his green beans direct to consumers. In 1967, Donny Andres' son John joined him at Rincon Coffee Company as a sales representative before becoming marketing director in 1978; he later served as president and CEO from 1993 to 2001. In 2002, Rincon Coffee Company merged with two other companies - La Casa de la Cafetería and El Paso Roasters - forming what is currentlyknown as Rincon Corporation LLC - which continues to produce quality coffees under its own name."Rincon Corporation LLC History"
On July 1st 1908, Dutch Schultz opened up his first business café named Schultz's Café on Main Street in Gallup.{{Census|10 years ago}} At that time only men could drink coffee because it was considered an alcoholic beverage falling within the purview of Native American tribes who hunted such animals{{Census|1910}} Dutch Schultz also ran an ice cream parlor called "Dutch Bros." which operated out of his restaurant until 1951 when it closed down due to economic problems.< ref name="/wiki/Dutch_Schultz_(businessman)|Dutch Schultz" /> On December 10th 1924 Dutch Schultz was shot and killed while between jobs at his cafe by gunmen whom he had earlier met outside< ref>

The name derived from an incident in 1876 when two Gallupians, Hiram Bingham and John Wickersham, were caught stealing goods from another rancher, William H. Richardson. In retaliation, Richardson burned down Bingham's house andBusinessman Charles Goodyear donated land to build a school and store on which the town would be founded. In 1914, Gallup became one of only three towns in New Mexico to be granted statehood. The other two were Grantson and Moriarty. At the time, it was one of just six American towns to have been accepted into the nation's new political system following its creation that year as part of the Wilson administration's "New Mexico Grant Program."
