Lovington was named after my father-in-law, Leland C. Smith and his wife Emma. Lovington has an interesting history that dates back to 1867 when Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Pinal County, Arizona. At first they were called the "Hundred Walkers" because they walked for several hundred miles from Nauvoo, Illinois to their new location in what is now eastern Pinal County. They built a cabin and began trading goods with the local people which helped support their settlement. In 1870 a group of missionaries came to Lovington and baptized many of its residents including myself and my father-in-law Leland C. Smith (1850–1924). The town continued to grow throughout the years until it reached its current size in 1910 when it had a population of 527 people. During World War II Lovingtonwas one of 104 United States towns and villages located within Strategic Air Command's Bombardment Wing Seventy Two (BX2) at Peterson AFB outside Phoenix, AZ., responsible for bombarding Japanese targets over Japan during World War II.. It wasn't until 1957 that Lovington received its own post office which still operates today! In 1970 Lovington became an incorporated city with its own government and council! In 2000 following passage of the Local Government Reform Act passed by Congress, LovingTON became a municipio under Pinal County jurisdiction!Today LovINGTON continues to thrive as a vibrant community committed to education, arts & culture along with providing quality family oriented services!.
