The first military unit to arrive was a detachment of sixteen soldiers from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico under the command of Captain Manuel Gomez. A few months later, another detachment arrived under the command of Lieutenant José Armijo. These units formed the nucleus of what would become the 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment, New Mexican Volunteers (1/3 Pemex). In 1846, when Texas became a United States state, portions of New Mexico were given to Texas as part of that state’s admission. This led to an increase in military activity in and around Portales. In 1851-52, General Antonio López y Costilla commanded a brigade consisting of two regiments and two batteries at Fort Union. He also organized and led a cavalry regiment known as Los Angeles Battalion (later redesignated 1st Cavalry Regiment). In 1865-66 he served as interim governor during provisional government periods while Governor Francisco Ruffin organized and led an army against Confederate forces at Santa Fe.
