Rio Rancho, New Mexico is a small town located in Pueblo County, New Mexico. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pecos River Valley micropolitan area. Rio Rancho, New Mexico is a town in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The Rio Rancho Adobe and Mission San José de Buenavista were two of the first Spanish missions in NewMexico. In 1795, Don Miguel Ruiz y Costilla established a presidio here to protect travelers passing through his land on their way to Santa Fe from Apaches and Mexican settlers who wanted to take them prisoner or drive them off their land. In 1847, President James K. Polk designated Rio Rancho as part of the newly created Department of Texas; this caused many ranchers in what is now Doña Ana County to flee for fear that they would be forced out of their homes by Mexican authorities. However, most of these men returned when Texas was made an independent country and New Mexico became part of it again in 1912. Rio rancho still retains its traditional adobe architecture with Adobe Walls running along both sides of streets and long alleys between buildings lead up to Adobe Towers where residents live today. While few people still live there full time because so much has changed since then (such as the arrival of Interstate 10), it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Doña Ana County due to its history and architecture
