However, Ciudad Juárez remains an important cultural destination today and is home to several museums including El Museo de la Historia Natural (The Museum of Natural History).
The Silver City area was first settled by the Pueblo of Cochiti in the 16th century. The first white man to arrive in the area was José Antonio Garza, who explored the region in 1827. From here, he began building a fur trading post on the Rio Grande. By 1830, silver had been discovered at this site and Garza became one of the richest men in Mexico. He built a large ranch near present-day Silver City and began extracting silver from nearby mines. In 1836, Garza founded what is now Pan American Gold Fields Ltd., which became one of North America's leading gold mining companies. Over time, othermont families also arrived in the area and started their own businesses. The panhandling legend of Jesse Owens began to spread through Silver City during World War II when many local citizens donated goods and money to help support the war effort.
