Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 10,439 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cortland County. The name of the town comes from Andrew Cornell's purchase of a farm there in 1814. A post office called Cortland existed from 1827 to 1870. In 1930, it was merged with Chambersburg and became part of that city's consolidated municipality. The Village of Cortland was formed in 1906 out of parts of the towns of Chambersburg and Parkersburg. On July 1, 1909, it was annexed by the City of Rochester as the result of an agreement between those two municipalities and then-Mayor Josiah Hylan. On October 15, 1911, residents voted to secede from Rochester due to disagreements over taxes and education funding; they remained part of the city until they were reabsorbed into it on January 1st, 1932 as part of a larger consolidation effort known as "Rochester/Cortland".
