Cortland, New York is a small town in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. It is located on the east side of the Great Lakes region and straddles the border between Ontario and Vermont. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. The name comes from an Iroquois word meaning "bridge over." The first Europeans to visit Cortland were French voyageurs in 1624. They named it for Pierre-Jacques Cartier, who had charted the area in 1596. Dutch traders also visited Cortland in 1624, but they did not rename it after their own country because they thought that India would be more interested in such a name than Europe was. The first settler in Cortland was Nicholas Willard, who arrived about 1702. He built a cabin on what is now Park Avenue near what is now Interstate 885. In 1711, John Morse arrived with his family and founded Morseville on what is now Congress Street. By 1800, there were around 100 people living hereabouts. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General George Washington's army besieged Fort Niagara on Lake Erie while he was campaigning against Britain. The fortifications at this location proved too strong for Washington's forces to storm and he retreated back across Niagara Falls without achieving any significant victory or taking any prisoners or supplies with him as he withdrew downstream towards Canada。 After the war ended, many soldiers who had been stationed near Fort Niagara decided to settle down around this fortification and began called themselves "Niagara men." One group of these soldiers built a log house on present-day Union Street which still stands today as one of the few remaining structures from that era in Cortland County.. In 1825–26 Felix Chauncy built a large frame dwelling known as Old Chauncy House on what is now West Seneca Boulevard just south of State Highway 9 (now I-885). This building became home to several families until it burned down circa 1840s . Another early settler named Augustus Lowenthal established himself hereabouts about 1830s when he bought 640 acres along present-day Main Street from Amos Seidel . During his time hereabout he laid out two townships – Lowenthaltown northeast of downtown and Germanown southwest of downtown – which formed part of East Aurora Township until 1898 when it merged into Aurora Township . In 1836–37 Samuel Whitney moved his family from Schenectady into this township where they lived until their death in 1865 . Whitney played an important role both politically and commercially during much OFS history including helping establish Aurora University.. Cortland, New York is a small town located in Cortland County, New York. The population was 7,553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Cortland County was George Washington Carver. He and his family came from northern Georgia in 1827 and started a farm near present day Albion. In 1847, John Dent bought the farm from Carver and added 1,000 acres to it. The town of Cortland was founded on December 12, 1851 byuben Purdy and others with the name of "Dent's Town". In 1858, three brothers named Charles Wistar established a millrace called Wisteria Run which ran through present day Cortland Township into Seneca Lake. This millrace became a major transportation artery for goods arriving from upstate New York via boats or wagons until the construction of Canandaigua Railroad in 1862 made this route obsolete. In 1865, James Fenton donated land to build an academy for freedmen called "Fenton Academy" which soon became one of the largest free black institutions in America. In 1899, local resident Arthur Ashe played tennis at Fenton Academy against some of the greatest players of that era including Federer and Marat Safin; this event helped spur development around campus that continues to this day. On February 5th, 1898 two hundred residents of Syracuse formed the Townshend Committee to dissolve themselves into their respective villages within Syracuse city limits following years of conflict between them over issues such as election regulations (the issue eventually led to open warfare between these two communities). On July 3rd 1870 when Mendenhall Law Firm moved its downtown office from downtown Buffalo to record production room 2B on Broadway at 50th Street – just across street from current day Stuyvesant High School – many people speculated that they may be joining forces with other similar firms seeking similar opportunities closer to home following suit with new technologies like photography/telegraphy making it possible for businesses on Fifth Avenue south side much easier access than ever before accessible by anyone regardless race or religion (Many white people who worked at Mendenhall Law Firm during this time also left aftermoving their offices–likely due largely to discrimination experiences experienced while working there).
