Depew was a small town in Erie County, New York, located on the south shore of Lake Ontario. The community was named for General Depew, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Niagara County. The first Europeans to visit Depew were Dutch settlers in 1614. On January 14, 1795,Depew had a population of 297 inhabitants; by 1825 it had declined to 153 persons. In 1827, the village was incorporated as part of the Town of Rome Township. The first post office at Depew was established on November 3, 1829; it closed on September 15, 1850. In 1840-41,depew built a wharf on the north shore of Lake Ontario for shipbuilding and trading with other villages along the Great Lakes region; however this activity ceased after Queen Victoria issued an order forbidding such commercial ventures near her shores. The harbor continued to be used for shipping until 1903 when it became unusable due to flooding caused by storms during wintertime; thereafter it reverted back to being an open air beach park known today as Anthony's Beach Park . He and his wife, Margaret, had two children: Nicholas and Deborah. The DePews were among the earliest Europeans to set foot in what is now Depew Township. Nicholas built a small log cabin on an east-west road that crossed the Susquehanna River near where present day US Route 20 meets NY Routes 9W and 11W. In 1768, he married Martha Townsend and began to raises crops and raise livestock on his land. In 1810, he became one of the incorporators of Town of Purchase; however, he never lived there full time because he died soon after moving into the new town. In 1814-1815, Nicholas' son Timothy built a sawmill on current NY Route 5 near today's intersection of NY Routes 9W and 11W. This mill continued operations until it burned down in 1825; however, Timothy's heirs continue to operate it as a museum today. In 1824-1825, John Kempton built a gristmill on current NY Route 5 north of today's village line between Purchase and White Plains; this mill also continued operation until it burned down in 1825. However, Kempton's heirs continue to operate it as a museum today. In 1830-1831, John Marsh sold depew lands to Abram Levy for $1 cash; these lands formed part of what is now Purchase Township (and still do).
