The Elmira Air Force Base Museum has a rich air force deployed history. The museum is located on the airport property that was once Elmira Municipal Airport. The air force base opened in 1940 and became Elmira AFB in 1945. In 1951, the United States Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which established the United States Air Force as a separate branch of the military with its own budget and authority. This act also created Elmira AFB to host this new USAF command structure. Air Force personnel began arriving at Elmira AFB in early 1951 and construction commenced on what would become one of America's largest military installations. The first buildings were erected within a year of the opening of the basecamp, and by 1953 all civilian buildings had been completed or were under construction. The main mission of AFB was Tactical Air Command (TAC) daylight bombing operations during World War II untilactivated on 1 Sep 1946 when it became Headquarters USAF, Central Command (CENTCOM). Inactivated again on 14 Sep 1949 when TAC was redesignated Directorate-Military Intelligence (DMI). Inactivated again 10 Jun 1955 when DMI was divided into Military Intelligence Agency (MIA) and Central Security Service (CSS). There are many interesting exhibits at AFB about how air force service members have helped shape our country over time. One exhibit tells the story of how Lt Col Robert Borman organized daycare services for Airmen while they were stationed overseas during World War II - he eventually became commanderof Operation Neptune's Spear which successfully destroyed two Japanese submarines off Key West, Florida on 15 Aug 1944! Another exhibit features photos from Langley AFB taken during peacetime as part of Project Bluebook which studied Soviet missile activity!. There is also an excellent exhibit about how local farmers have donated land to be used as an Army staging area for chemical warfare training exercises during World War I! Finally, there is an exhibit about how AF vehicles have been used for police work throughout New York State!

The name of the town changed to Elmira from Albion in 1828 because of a dispute between Albion and Tioga Counties over who should receive the springs which lay within their respective boundaries. In 1880, a new water tower was built on Main Street east of the courthouse square to provide water for businesses and residents living in the town centre. The tower still stands today and provides drinking water to many buildings throughout the community. In 1944, an air raid warning station (AER) was built near where Main Street crosses Route 5 south of downtown Elmira; it remains operational today as an emergency weather radio station broadcasting hourly updates on severe thunderstorms across northwestern NY and extreme weather warnings during tornado watches/advisories. On November 15th 1964 Elmira high School hosteda program called "Star-Spangled Banner" which featured American Idol contestants Christopher Burke and Kelly Clarkson performing patriotic songs including "America" by John Lennon and McCartney as well as "The Star-Spangled Banner" created by Stephen Foster with lyrics about America's unyielding values: freedom, justice, democracy etc..
