Fresh roasted coffee first began to be enjoyed by the people of Geneva, New York in the 1840s. The town was then located on the border of what is now Switzerland and Austria. At that time, many farmers were interested in importing coffee because it was a valuable crop which could provide them with a sustainable income. It wasn’t until after World War II that fresh roasted coffee became popularized outside of Europe. The first roasters in Geneva were small businesses who would roast their own beans and sell them directly to their customers. Over time, larger roasters began to enter the market, but smaller businesses continued to operate until the late 1800s when large companies took over. At this point, fresh roasted coffee had become one of the most popular commodities within North America. Today, there are many different types of fresh roasted coffee available throughout North America. Some of these include Italian Roasts, Brazilian Roasts, Ethiopian coffees, Columbian coffees, Guatemalan coffees and Sumatra Coffees. A number of institutions have been founded in Geneva including St John's Lutheran Church which was built in 1892; North Country Academy which opened in 1922; South Mountain Community College which opened in 1957; Geneva Junior-Senior High School (now known as City Hall Middle School) which opened in 1954; Geneva Area Vocational Technical School (now known as Northeastern State University) from 1968-2006 and finally the Genevese Soccer Club from 2006-present

In 1868, local influential citizens commissioned surveyor George Aiken to create a plan for improved transportation between Albany and Schenectady by creating a road from Geneva to Troy via Auburn and Saratoga Springs. The Erie Canal was completed through Geneva in 1869; as a result, trade increased along the route and new businesses sprang up around the canal stopoffs such as Mr. Barber's operates at present day Third Street (then Elmira Road). A fire destroyed most of downtown Geneva on December 5th 1984 during an outbreak of arson that swept across Upstate New York

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain. The following year, the Declaration of Independence was drafted and ratified by the United States Congress. The signing of the Declaration of Independence took place at Philadelphia on September 3, 1776.
