The first European to set foot in what is now Kingston was Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor, who landed there on July 4, 1614 with his group of French traders seeking passage to England. By 1624 the area had been settled by English colonists and the name was changed from "New Amsterdam" to "Kingston." In 1784, when Kings County was created from parts of Ulster and Westchester counties, Kingston became part of that county. In 1807–1808 a smallpox pandemic struck eastern New York and Kingston experienced one of the highest rates of infection in any town or village in that region; over 50% of its residents were infected. After successfully containing the disease for several years by vaccination campaigns and other measures, however, smallpox returned to depth throughout parts of New York State in 1839. A program begun in 1846 aimed at teaching schoolchildren about warning signs of smallpox and providing treatment for those who contracted it led gradually to an end to this public health problem until1948 when it resumed as a major public health concern due again mainly to airborne transmission In 1898–1900 construction began on Interstate 95 between Buffalo and Yonkers; this helped Kingston become known as a commercial center for upstate New York. Kingston was a small town in York County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The first people to live in Kingston were the Mohawk and Oneida clans. The Dutch founded Kingston on April 13, 1614 as an English trading post on the east side of the Susquehanna River. In 1798, Kingston was claimed by Connecticut as part of its boundary dispute with Pennsylvania over lands west of the Delaware River. On January 1, 1799, Kingston became a part of New York State after it was divided from Pennsylvania by Governor George Washington. In 1828, Kingston had a population of 2,000 and constructed a public schoolhouse known as Queen's Grove School for girls which still stands today. In 1830-1831, Kingston hosted the first meeting of what would become the Albany Cotton Exchange and in 1839 it became home to the first local newspaper in upstate New York called "The Patriot." In 1847-1848 General Slocum destroyed two bridges over Susquehanna River near present day Kingston while retreating from Major General David Hunter's Indian Expedition during what is known as Slocum's Expedition; this event is generally cited as sparking much anti-immigration sentiment that continues to this day across most parts of Upstate New York due to memories related to that particular expedition. In 1865–1966 construction began on Kings Highway (now I-84) which connected Syracuse with downtown Buffalo and other eastern towns within upstate New York through what is now central Niagara County;Kingsway Boulevard crossed over Route 20A just south of present day Kingston/Niskayuna when it was built. The original routing followed present-day Routes 20A and 8 before turning northwest towards Herkimer County and terminating at Lake Ontario north of Niagara Falls; however future extensions along I-84 led directly to Queenstown via exit 6B (now US 201) in today'sNiagara Falls suburb Of Ranaldsville where highway construction continued into 1970 despite protests by local residents who felt their rural land would be better served by another expressway connection instead
