The Lackawanna Air Force Base was established in 1941 as a bomber and fighter force center. The base is home to the New York Air National Guard's 4th Wing, which includes the 436th Bombardment Wing and the 515th Fighter Wing. In 2006, the Lackawanna AFB Museum opened its doors to the public. The museum features exhibits on wartime aviation history from World War II to the present day. In 2007, the United States military announced it would begin withdrawing all of its troops from Iraq by September 30, 2011. As part of this withdrawal, many soldiers and their families were discharged from military service throughout New York State. This left portions of Lackawanna AFB without any American troops for nine months. This caused issues for local businesses that needed employees during that time. One business that experienced some difficulties was J&J Pizza, which employed around 50 people at the time of withdrawal but lost those jobs after no orders came in for months on end. One solution offered by US forces was to give Saddam Hussein's son Uday Hussein access to an airfield on RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire so he could fly his helicopters across English Channel into Britain for refueling purposes. Unfortunately for Uday Hussein, this offer did not go through because MI6 discovered it and got involved instead. Lackawanna AFB also played a role in providing support during Operation Neptune's Spear when Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in 1990-91 using Lockheed C-130 Hercules bombers and Douglas A-3 Skyhawks as strike aircraft (the 505th Airlift Squadron also flew transport missions). During Operation Desert Storm in 1991-92 USAF F-16 Fighting Falcons bombed Iraqi oil refineries while ground units supported with artillery provided close air support; these airstrikes resulted in civilian deaths and injuries among Iraqis living near refinery sites.).

The Lackawanna Air Force Base Museum of the USAF has a gift history dating back to World War II. The museum's first gift was a watch from The General Electric Company in 1942. From then until 1964, the museum received many donations of military artifacts and tools from the military and civilians who lived or worked at Lackawanna AFB. In 1966, the museum became officially dedicated as the Lackawanna Air Force Base Museum of Military History and Heritage. In 1978, curator Donny Snyder donated an American helicopter to the museum. In 1984, curator Bob Black donated a memento from World War II to the museum. In 1992, curator John Healy donated an aircraft restoration project to the museum. Since 1998, when historian Rich Ziegler joined the staff at Lackawanna AFB Museum of Military History and Heritage, gifts have come infrom all over New York state in support of this important center for military history on base. These include items such as uniforms, weapons and equipment from both during World War II and now, as well as items related to air force aviation history including helicopters and planes!
Lackawanna is a small town in New York State that lies on the southern border of Erie County. The population was 4,362 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna is located approximately six miles east of Erie and twelve miles west of Buffalo. The name Lackawanna comes from an Iroquois word meaning "the place where the deer live." The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lackawanna were Dutch traders and missionaries who established a trading post here in 1664. In 1724, the area became part of Pennsylvania, but by 1800 its residents had formed a loose community known as Saugerties (named after two nearby hamlets). In 1825, when Erie County was created, Saugerties became part of it. Lackawanna's founders were Patriots who saw their land seized by George Washington during the American Revolution and they decided to resist British rule. They built their first mill here in 1795 and soon began exporting wheat, flour and other commodities to England. However, because of high prices received for these exports, economic troubles beset the town until 1827 when it was purchased by Andrew Mellon from James Buchanan for $1 million dollars. Mellon quickly brought about changes to the town's character including developing public transportation which allowed for more access to jobs outside of town; building new homes; creating a library; and establishing schools throughout the community which helped keep children occupied during times of family strife or lack thereof. Additionally, he founded several businesses including Mellon Steel Company which manufactured locomotives and other industrial products in Lackawango until his death in 1957; Mellon Glass Companies which produced windows along with other products such as porcelain; Mellon Air Traffic Control Service which operated radar systems at various airports across America until his death in 1971; Mellon Bank which served as both an investment bank and a lending institution throughout much of its history before becoming fully automated under Delaware National Bank ownership following deregulation in 1978; Mellon Restaurantswhich opened up locations throughout eastern United States serving traditional American cuisine such as steak houses, seafood restaurants etc.; Mellons Ice Creamswhich are now one of America’s most popular brands ice cream companies started out selling chocolate milk

The YF-7A became known as “the Palo Alto” because it was gifted to the United States Air Force by Stanford University graduate and WWII fighter ace, John Palo Alto Jr. Prior to this gift, there were no such aircraft available for use by American military personnel.
