Lancaster is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,719 at the 2010 census. Lancaster is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lancaster was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists who fled British tyranny. In 1800, the town received its charter from State of New York and became a village. It enlarged in 1824 when it annexed the adjacent towns of Elgin and Rome Township. The name Lancaster may be derived from "Langdon" on the Scioto River which flowed through those towns, or "Lancthon" (meaning "high place") given to it by Sir John Lanckhurst who settled there in 1792.
