Lockport, New York is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was platted in 1813 by Capt. John Lock and Dr. Samuel Snyders as the villages of Lockport and Nisbet on what is now Main Street east of the village line. The first settler in Lockport was George Sheppard who arrived in 1796 along with his brother James and their parents from Delaware County, Pennsylvania. All three men were naturalized citizens of New York when they arrived here. By 1800, there were twenty-four pioneers living in Lockport including: Daniel Herrick (1778-1848), Isaac Hartsock (1780-1847), Nicholas Bache (1784-1854), Ezekiel Frye (1800-1862), Elijah Whitehead (1800-1850), Job Chapman (1800-1846) and Richard Seymour Jr.(1800-) In 1814 Captain John Lock purchased 1/3 interest in the common land between Nisbet Pond near present day Elmira Road and post office square west of town for $2 per acre; this area became known as "The Necklace." Captain John's heirs continued to hold title to this property until it was sold to Erie Railroad Co., which conveyed it to the city government on July 3, 1860 for $5 per acre ($). On that date lockport became an incorporated town under Act No. 710 of 1860 followed by name change on November 15th same year from " Lockport" to " Rochester". In February 1862 a fire destroyed most of downtownLockport but saved many homes on Main Street which still stands today as one of the most iconic landmarks in town center! A Great Fire Monument has been erected at this location since then in memory of all that lost during that tragic night! A new courthouse was built around 1830s next door to current day Elmira Road but it burned down several times throughout its history; finally being replaced by a more permanent structure about 1840 which still stands today on College Avenue just south Of Main Street lock port also had a schoolhouse until about 1896 when it too burned down
The village of Lockport was formed in 1814 when the two villages of Lockport and Northville amalgamated. The name is derived from the Dutch word "lock" meaning a gate or barrier, and "port" meaning place. The first settler in what is now Lockport was Nicholas de Swaats, who arrived in 1667. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the Niagara River. In 1792, George Clinton founded what is now Clinton University in nearby Rochester. In 1814, Lockport United Methodist Church was built on Main Street. It served as a church until 1951 when it became an educational institution known as Clinton University School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
