The military has a long and proud history in Massapequa Park, New York. The town was originally settled by Dutch farmers in the early 1600s, and the first reference to an army deployment is from 1694. In 1814, General George Washington's army invaded Canada and called on the Dutch to help him fight against the British Royal Army. Dutch farmers responded by sending their militiamen to help America win its war against Great Britain. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century as soldiers were stationed here for various purposes. In 1869, General John Pershing brought his American Expeditionary Force (AEF) into Massapequa Park for a six-month campaign against Mexico. During this time, there were many military installations in and around town including Fort Tryon, which still stands today; Millbrook barracks; and several other buildings still used by the military today. In World War II, Massapequa Park was home to two of the largest USAAF airfields in New York City: Farmingdale Airport and Elmira Airfield. both of which played a significant role in supporting fighter operations over Europe during WWII. Elmira Airfield also hosted one of Japan's most important airfields during that conflict- IJN Shuri Station- making it one of only a few places outside of Japan where Japanese aircraft could be observed flying operationally! After WWII, Massapequa Park resumed its role as an important military base with numerous structures remaining from prior years such asFort Tryon Garrison Command Post (1946-1948), Navy Naval History Center (1964-1966), Headquarters Ulysses S. Grant III Barracks (1968), Headquarters 2nd Infantry Division (1969-1970), Headquarters 1st Infantry Division (1971). As recently as 2006, Fort Drum remains active with forces conducting training exercises at Plattsburgh AFB nearby! Today, defense spending continues to play a significant role in Massapequa Park life with multiple agencies like Westchester County Sheriff's Office/FBI using facilities here while also hosting events like United States Military Academy cadet summer camp & football game annuals at iconic Trump National Golf Course!

In 1812, the Massapequa Park Militia was organized. The militia served as a training ground for New York's volunteer infantry regiment, the 7th Regiment of Foot. In 1814, the Militia was disbanded and its members transferred to the New York State Reserves. In 1861, NY state troops were called into service to fight in the American Civil War. Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter and artillery batteries at Massapequa Park on April 12th 1861. The engagement ended with Union forces emerging victorious and capturing all Confederate cannons and stores of ammunition. The park is now home to an Army Garrison Museum which displays items from both sides of the war including uniforms, flags, weapons and more.

Massapequa Park is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 21,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first post office in Massapequa was established on November 6, 1793. The name "Massapequa" meaning "a clear stream" came from the Lenape word matsaqueo which meant "to make water clear." The town was originally settled by Dutch colonists who named it "Hertogenbosch", after their king's home in Holland. In 1814, the U.S. government renamed it to honor General James Ketchum, who had fought during the war of 1812 and been made a brigadier general at the Battle of Saratoga (July 2). As a result of this event and other changes in American naming policy, Massapequa became known as Ketchumstown after him. In 1821, following an act by Governor George Clinton to provide for township organization within Nassau County (!), residents voted to form a new borough called West Hempstead with its own mayor and council; this vote followed similar ones that had occurred within other townships throughout Nassau County since 1800. The boroughs were not granted political autonomy until 1902 when they were consolidated into one municipality under the name of Nassau County.[1] During World War I, Massapequa played an important role as an airfield for bombing raids over New York City; many aircraft were based here including America's only B-17 Flying Fortress training squadron (the 402d Bombardment Squadron). After hostilities ended in 1918, most aviation activity ceased and mass transit began operations through Parkway Drive; however some local businesses continued operation until 1969 when all but two closed down because of high costs associated with maintaining such a large open space with few permanent residents or businesses. The first European to visit the area now known as Massapequa Park was Giovanni Domenico della Rocca in 1624. He named it after his home village of Rocca di Massa, in the province of Ferrara, Italy. The area now known as Massapequa Park was part of what is now Nassau County, New York. In 1764, George Washington and his army passed through the park while on their way to White Plains from West Point. The next year, General James Clinton landed at Saratoga Springs and took possession of Fort Clinton in the park. The site became an important military post during the American Revolution because it was located within easy striking distance of New York City.
