Massena is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Mohawk word "massa" meaning "great nation." The first Europeans to visit Massena were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of 15 men on July 14, 1524, when they sighted a group of Indians off the coast of what is now Niagara Falls. They named the place Nauset Point for John Nephew Massena, one of their observers. In 1614-1615, Englishman Robert Devereux and his party sailed up the Hudson River from Albany to explore what lay ahead. He stopped at Massena on September 12th and ordered Captains John Norvell and Nathaniel Bacon to take him ashore to purchase some goods with which he had been travelling; but they refused because they did not believe that he was really an Indian agent. Captain Norvell afterwards sent a deputation consisting of himself and three others back upriver with letters patent dated February 10th 1617 authorizing him “to build fortifications upon this side (the Hudson) against any design or designs” by hostile Indians “who have hitherto been wanting us hereabouts”. The Dutch also visited Massena in 1617-18; however no permanent structures were built until after American independence in 1776 when General George Washington sent two parties upriver under Major William Howe to probe British claims about territory downriver then under French control called Quebec (present day Montreal). One party reached Monrovia (present day Albany), while the other made it as far as Fort Erie before being destroyed by Native Americans who managed to get into position just before its capture on October 25th 1776. After that date there was continuous construction activity due both to war efforts by both sides as well as settlement by white people seeking land around Buffalo Creek where mills would be built beginning in 1807 including one erected by James Kieft called Kieft's Mill which still stands today near the junction of Rte 9 southbound and Rte 141 eastbound serving local farmers today known as McKelvey's Corners plaza shopping center located across from IHOP restaurant

In the late 1600s, Massena in Chenango County was a thriving village of about 1,000 people. By 1700, however, it had declined to a small town of about 100 people due to heavy flooding and the loss of many farming fields to water damage. In 1701, the British burned Massena while they marched through Chenango County looking for New York City's rebels. The village was rebuilt quickly and by 1710 it had reached its peak as an important regional center with a population of around 200 people. However, by1712 Massena had again decline as a result of heavy flooding that destroyed most of the villagers' farmland and their only means of subsistence. The town's decline continued until 1727 when construction began on the Great Lakes Bridge connecting Buffalo with Lake Ontario. This project helped revive Massena as an important trade center and led to its growth into a major regional center with a population of over 500 people by 1800. The town also experienced another boom during the early 19th century due to new railroads being built through Chenango County and new businesses being established in town. Despite these successes, however, Massena eventually fell out of favor during the 20th century because it became increasingly difficult to maintain its status as an important local community despite occasional bursts of growth. Today, Massena is still an important community located in Chenango County but its economy has been greatly affected by recent changes within New York State which have made it much more difficult for towns like Massena to maintain their traditional roles in rural New York society
