The area at that time was inhabited by the Mohawk people and the other nations who had been drawn to this part of North America by the fur trade. The English settlers were not welcomed and their arrival caused a conflict which lasted for many years. Eventually, the English agreed to cede control of this area to the Dutch in 1624. This event marked the beginning of a period of British rule over New Netherland. During this time, Massena was an important trading town because it served as a key link between Albany and New Amsterdam on Long Island. It also became home to some of Dutch culture and language here before it finally fell into English hands in 1664. Massena has experienced various types of development over its history including being known for its flour mills, breweries, cheese production, timber manufacturing etc. However, its most famous landmark is undoubtedly its Roman Catholic church which stands proud today despite numerous attempts by developers to demolish it over the years.

Massena is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–on-Hudson, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Massena was formed from parts of the towns of Rome and Auburn on December 12, 1836. The first settler in what is now Massena was Abram Phelps who arrived with his family in 1797 and built a small log cabin on the northeast side of present-day Main Street. Phelps' son John came to Massena in 1825 and platted it off as an unincorporated village. In 1837, Samuel Morse sent a telegraph wire from Syracuse through what is now Massena for the first time and opened up this new market for goods that could be shipped by land or water. massenaty post office was established March 15, 1840 under the name Rome; it closed operations on October 6th 1861 due to financial troubles related to the American Civil War (4 years before Buffalo). On November 3rd 1860, during its centennial year, the town held its first election which resulted in three trustees being elected with one term each: Hemanus Cutts (1860-1861),John Fenton (1861-1865),and Salmon Purdy (1865-1907). In 1862 when there were only 10 villagers total within five miles of town limits – 5 more than at present day – fire destroyed most all structures within two blocks around Green’s Tavern so much so that it took over a year for rebuilding beginning February 11th 1865 until November 12th 1865 when all but 4 buildings still standing replaced including 2 churches! Aftermath of Civil War & Reconstruction saw businesses open up again such as flour mills & gristmills w/hot air ovens & other machinery needed after reconstruction ended wit no physical resources available anymore picnics became more common
Massena is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,635 at the 2010 census. The name came from the Massaqua River and the surrounding land. The first European to visit Massena was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The town's first school opened in 1828. In 1852, Samuel Morse built a sawmill on the river and named it after himself. In 1865, the village of Massena merged with neighboring towns of Indianola and Rome to form what would become Chenango County. In 1840, John Cranch erected a grist mill on the river near present-day Massena. That mill became known as Cranch & Company Mill until 1907 when it was sold to J P Morgan & Co. For many years, this mill continued to produce flour for local markets but ceased operations in 2008 due to financial problems; however remnants of the mill still stand today adjacent to US Route 9A north of town
