The first was Nicholas Wecker, who opened his business in 1802. It is believed that he started creating shotguns and rifles specifically for hunting deer and other game. His shop became a popular destination for hunters and fishermen, as well as farmers and their families who needed reliable firearms to protect their property. In 1825, John Cope established a blacksmith shop next door to Nicholas Wecker’s store. He produced cannons, pistols, shotguns, rifle cartridges and other Firearms Accessories until 1851 when he moved his shop to Utica Avenue. In 1892 Charles Hennepin opened his own hardware store on Main Street which served as the center of the shooting community in Newburgh for many years. Many people from this area settled down in what is now known as Southbridge Township after moving there during the early 1800s because of its fertile farmland and ample amounts of timber resources. During prohibition times (1912- 1933), it was often difficult for law enforcement officials to obtain ammunition due to restrictions placed by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF). As a result, many criminals turned to shotgunning victims instead. This practice led to an increase in shootings throughout the city during this time period because Shotgun dealers were not allowed to sell ammunition that could be used in handguns or rifles

The Newburgh Rifle and Pistol Club has been a non-profit organization since 1892. The club was founded in response to the need for firearms in the town of Newburgh, then part of Albany County. The club is one of the oldest rifle and pistol clubs in upstate New York.
Newburgh is a small town in upstate New York, located on the Finger Lakes. The population was 10,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mohawk Valley region and lies within the boundaries of the Adirondack Park Reserve System. The first settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived in 1655 from London. After Purchase of Minnesota by France in 1763, Montresor moved his family to Canada where they founded DeMontresor's Station near present-day Toronto. Nicholas bought 624 acres (2 km²) of land around what is now downtown Newburgh for $5 per acre (0.25 ha). He built a home there and named it "Newburgh". His grandson John de Montresor (1686-1751), also known as John Noble, donated 5 acres (1 km²) of this land to Stonington Seminary in 1764 for use as a school campus; this became Newman Academy today. Reverend Samuel Johnson established an Episcopal church on Main Street in 1814 and named it "Church Hill". In 1837, Drury Lane School opened with 23 students; it later grew into Canandaigua Normal School which closed in 1957 and reopened as Polytechnic Institute of Technology today before being renamed again to Newburgh State University in 2002 In 1846, George Stephenson developed new transportation methods here when he designed and built the Erie Canal: locks that allowed boats to travel through single lanes across two large stretches of water without stopping or reversing—a feat still attempted today by Water Resources Development Authorityboats travelling between Niagara Falls and Buffalo Harbor In 1881, Edwin Mapes organized a group comprising farmers, mechanics and others who purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of town for development called "Mapesville" after its founder; it became Riverside Farms until finally becoming excellent farmland surrounding Suffield Lake By 1900 only 2% of households were rural while 95% were white collar users or employed outside the farm economy; by 1930 only 3% remained rural while 98% employed outside agricultural production The manufacturing sector exploded during World War II with many companies locating here including TWA Airlines Boeing Aircraft Corporation Ford Motor Company General Electric Motors United States Steel Company Post Office Department Ivar Geisler Photography
