Ogdensburg, New York is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Ogdensburg comes from a Dutch word meaning "humble place." The first settler in what is now Ogdensburg was John Harden in 1792. He and his family founded Harden's Mill on the banks of the Schuylkill River. This mill did not become successful and Harden sold it to Ebenezer Weeden in 1800. Weeden built a gristmill on the stream which ran through our town today. In 1825 he donated land for a public school and erected the first schoolhouse in what is now Ogdensburg. In 1827 Samuel Morse settled here and started transmitting messages over Telegraph Hill using an early version of telephone technology. Morse's message "A B C D E F" was first transmitted from this hill on December 7th, 1837 with distance of . Morse's house still stands as one of only two remaining examples of pre-1930 architecture in Ogdensburgh (the other being Our Lady Of Fatima School). A post office was established at Ogdensburgh in 1830, and remained open until 1916 when it merged into Utica postal service Ogilvie Manufacturing Company began production here around 1860 as a manufacturer of agricultural implements such as hoes and grain bags; however, within a few decades Ogilvie had lost its monopoly to General Electric Co., which introduced automatic machines for manufacturing bicycles around 1900 As Utica grew larger during World War II there were more manufacturing jobs available than space for housing so many people moved into towns like Utica or Rome after Pearl Harbor because they could not find good employment elsewhere . Many single men found work at local munitions plants while others worked their way up through military service or government education . After the war many people decided that they no longer wanted to live near industry so they left their homes behind and started new lives away fromUtica Today there are still some small businesses located downtown that continue to provide jobs for locals but most residents commute to jobs outside town either via Interstate 95 or by way of Route 9 east out of town

Ogdensburg was founded in 1788 by Captain Christopher Ogden and his family. It became a town in 1827 and then a village in 1859. The population of Ogdensburg peaked at over 10,000 in the 1870s but fell to 5,700 by 1910.Today, the population is only 1,600. Ogdensburg is located on the southern edge of New York State and is bordered by Canada to the east, Vermont to the west, and Ontario to the north. The town straddles Mohawk Lake which gives it its name. The first settlers arrived here from Connecticut via what is now Vermont. They were farmers who took up land that had been abandoned by Native Americans because of English efforts to civilize them. The English named their new settlement after General George Washington who had died during the Revolutionary War. Captain Ogden moved his family here from Hartford in 1788 when he found rich land east of where he lived already possessed by other settlers. He built a cabin and started farming his land with help from his family and friends including Major Moses Browning who donated two acres for each settler they brought into the area. Browning also supplied tools, flour, milk and other supplies for the community as well as construction materials needed for building its early courthouse which was completed in 1800. The growth of Ogdensburg came slowly due in part to lack of available water supply as well as obstacles such as high hills that made movement difficult even for small teams of men while nearby towns enjoyed easy access to water resources through canals or rivers. However, with increased transportation options thanks to railsroads being built throughout New York state starting around 1840 things began to change Thanks largely to Captain Ogden’s enterprising spirit which saw Ogdensburg become one of America’s leading agricultural communities along with Buffalo (New York) until that city’s incorporation into Buffalo County five years later In 1847 becoming part of Erie County).
