Ossining, New York is a small town located in the Ulster County of New York. The population was 2,055 as of the 2010 census. Ossining is an agricultural community with rolling hills bordered by woods to the south and east. The name Ossining comes from the Dutch word "ossijn", meaning "a kind of fungus". The first European settlers in what is now Ossining were Dutchmen who arrived in 1624. The area that is now Ossining was part of Albany County until 1785 when it became part of Kings County. In 1814, during the War of 1812, a skirmish occurred near present-day Ossining between American and British forces and as a result, Battle Ground Road (now Main Street) was named after this event. In 1827, John Stratton started an orchard on land west of present day Middlewick Road. This Orchard would become one of the largest apple orchards in America and continue to be operated today by his descendants. In 1842, construction began on what would eventually become Westchester High School which opened its doors in 1850. It was here that first grade students learned English at home through correspondence courses and then went on to attend local public schools until they could enroll in school proper. During World War I there was significant growth within Ossining due to munitions production which took place at two nearby factories: Convex Manufacturing Company and Standard Chemical Works Incorporated (later Bechtel Corporation). Many North Italian immigrants who had settled around Albany were drafted into service during World War I and many left their homes permanently for military duty; however, very few actually enlisted locally because enlistment bonuses were not offered outside New York City for citizens living within easy commuting distance from camp sites or battlefields where troops were being fought (although soldiers did receive discounts off food prices). A total of 9200 people served in World War I out OF THE 6300 NEW YORK CITY LANDED MILITARY PERSONNEL!

Ossining is a town in western New York, United States. The population was 11,872 at the 2010 census. Ossining is part of the Erie County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Ossining were five men and three women who arrived on a vessel called "Erie" on November 1, 1792 from Albany, New York. They named their new settlement after Sir George Clinton's estate near Kingston upon Hull in England (now part of East Sussex). The early residents built crude huts with logs they gathered from the forest floor. In 1801, Nicholas Biddle donated land to the town for a public square and school house. In 1806, John Morse donated land for an armory and depot to be used by the army for munitions storage In 1827-28 Ebenezer Cooke built a sawmill on the east side of mills creek which became known as Cooke's Mills. The mill continued operation until it burned down in 1908. In 1830-31 George Stephenson donated land to form what is now downtown Ossining and westward extensions of Beaver Dam Road which bisects Mohawk Valley today . He also laid out streets according to his design – High Street or Main Street running north-south through downtown; Water Street running east-west through northwest corner of town; Orange Avenue or Spring Garden Road running northeast-southwest through southeast corner; Schoolberry Avenue or Northumberland Avenue running southwest-northeast through center of town ; Dundalk Place (later Downingtown) intersecting Canal Road south of city limits ) Oneida Lake Park was established along Oneida River between Main Street and Water Streets in 1849 while portions still remain underdeveloped
