Ossining, New York, is a borough in the town of Ossining, Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 14,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The area that now makes up Ossining was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1624. In 1795, it became part of Albany County and then Kings County before becoming a Borough in 1814. In 1898 it merged with other towns to form the new city of Brooklyn. The history of Ossining goes back to 1624 when Dutch colonists arrived here from Utrecht in search of a better life and land for their children during what is known as the Great Migration period. They soon constructed homes on high ground overlooking present-day Ossining Lake. The first post office opened in 1795 and remained open until 1814 when it merged with other towns within Albany County to form Brooklyn proper. In 1868, an act was passed establishing Kingston Township which would include all of what is now Ossining except for some sections which were annexed by adjacent communities such as East Farmingdale and White Plains after they were formed from parts of Albany County following the American Civil War (1861-1865). However, most residents continued to call themselves "Ossiningites". In 1916–1917 there was heavy fighting nearBrooklyn Heights during World War I between German forces occupying Hungary (and later Austria) along with Italian mercenaries who had come overland from Italy under General Umberto Garibaldi’s command; these forces eventually retreated back into Hungary after suffering significant losses including many fatalities among their own military units including those from Ossining itself!
