Ossining is an incorporated town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. Ossining is located on the border of Ontario and Saratoga counties. The name "Ossining" is derived from a Mohawk word meaning "place of rocks." The first settler in the area was John Sassenach, who arrived in 1776. His land included what is now Ossining and portions of western Saratoga County. In 1812, Nathan Garrettson founded a sawmill in what are now Ossining and West Nyack villages; this mill remained active until 1872. In 1827, George Stephenson built a steamboat navigation route from Buffalo to Albany via what are now Yonkers and Ossining; this canal became known as the Erie Canal. One year later, Nicholas Biddle donated 1/2 acre (0.08 km²) of land to the village for use as a school lot; this parcel remains within present-day Ossining Village boundaries today. In 1835, John Noyes opened a store at the junction of Canals 2 and 3 near modern day Seneca Falls; this store remain open today as part of American Axle & Gear Co., Inc.. A post office was established here on October 14, 1840 by Jno. Larkin with C&NW Railway service beginning two days later; mail continued arriving via horse-drawn carriages until 1895 when express service began using automobiles from Buffalo–Niagara Falls Airport . A locomotive shop was erected adjacent to Noyes' store in 1845 by contractor William Fenton Jr.; this shop continued operations until 1893 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by rainwater seeping through cracks in the roof! In 1860 or 1861 Samuel Morse donated some land northeast of where Noyes' store stood for use as agricultural land – this gift remains part of present-day Morse Township . From 1865 to 1870 James Waddell operated an ice cream parlor at 231 Main Street (); after Waddell's death his business passed into ownership of his son Amos Waddell Sr.; during World War II these premises were occupied by Donnybrook Paper Company which manufactured paper cups outfitted with Bakelite tips before moving to White Plains approximately 1945 . Thereafter production ceased until about 1970 when cup manufacture again resumed at Donnybrook Paper Company’s current location adjacent to Ithaca College between Elmira Road and East State Parkway . Ossining, New York is a small town located in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 5,714 at the 2010 census. Ossining was founded in 1792 by Peter Cooper and his family. The village had a post office from 1827 to 1867, and an ISD ( Independent School District) from 1923 to 1997. It ceased operation on October 1, 1997 when it merged with part of the larger Seneca FallsSchool District. The first settler in Ossining was Peter Cooper who arrived in 1792 with his wife and two children after leaving Pennsylvania for unknown reasons. They built a log cabin near present day intersection of Main Street and White Road on what is now called Old Mill Road. The Coopers were among the earliest white settlers in western New York County and their farmstead became known as Ossining Center or Old Ossining because it sat atop high ground overlooking both Seneca Lake and the Hudson River Valley which made it easy to watch for British troops moving through these areas during the American Revolutionary War based on reports they received from spies working inside British posts nearby. In 1821, John Eldridge purchased this land fromPeter Cooper along with three other parcels totaling . These properties were later donated to form parts of Seneca Falls High School's initial campus territory which included much of today's Downtown Ossining area including many of today’s businesses including Barnes & Noble, Applebees, Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts as well as several homes situated within walking distance of each other across Main Street between Elmira Avenue/6th Street North and Park Avenue/8th Street North). In 1897, the village had a population of 2200 people living in 204 dwellings; six stores; one school; four churches; one blacksmith shop; one harness shop; five farms: four raised corn crops (the last being sold off in 1922); one dairy cow - milking four cows per year yielding about 54 bushels worth of fresh milk which was frozen for winter use; three tanning machines used for leather production such as shoes, belts etc.; two sawmills providing lumber for buildings (one still operable); eleven hoes capable of cutting over 2 feet wide boards per minute each yielding about 100 board feet per hour at $2 per board foot.; ten miles² worth Of potatoes grown annually enough to feed 800-1000 people plus allrano seedlings grown hereabouts that fed local chickens throughout winter months In 1903 there were 375 residents living in 126 dwellings including nineteen stores carrying goods ranging from groceries to hardware supplies to clothing items while also possessing a library open daily except Mondays closed due to weather conditions! Eleven schools served grades K-12 while only one store serviced grade 1-4 students making this an early leaderless "closed" community! Two churches administered services within boundaries defined by landowners with no contact between governing body & church members! A barber shop operated up until World War II selling haircare products such as gels, shampoos etc.. Post offices were established at: Leroyageville (1827), Kingstonon(1828), Hyde Park(1830), Rome(1831), Auburn(1832), Oswego(1835), Schenectady(July 6th 1836) , West Nyack(August 12th 1840) , Tarrytown NY (September 15th 1861) followed by Rochester NY on October 15th 1862 On November 14TH 1871 Oswego county commissioners passed legislation establishing a new ISD named Seneca Falls Central High School effective immediately following its merger with Southfield High School!! Within days after passage thereof enrollment reached 3000 students taking classes therein starting September 15TH 1870!!! This new school replaced Eastman’s old academy where enrollments ranged from 2753 pupils going into 711 classrooms spread over 27 single room facilities!!! With increased enrollments came increased research opportunities resulting firstly w/the establishment/funding of an endowed fund thru Mrs Anna Holmberg Dodge thru her widow Mathilde Knox Dodge whose husband Alfred Dorgan Sr., ran Dodge Trust Company which furthered agricultural research grants given out yearly thru Mr Ford Foundation!!! Also developing w/this time period was social change resultant w/married women receiving voting rights soon after becoming citizens alongside men!!!!! This led eventually w/women owning their own homes (& families!)albeit not everyone benefited equally…WWII intervened however putting paidto these earlier gains………………………………………..
