There has been coffee brewing in Schenectady, New York since at least 1821. The first coffeehouses were opened in the city during the late 1830s and early 1840s and continue to be open to this day. In 1851, Augustus Heine, a German immigrant and coffee importer, opened the first local roastery in Schenectady. At that time, he brewed his own coffee beans and served them fresh from his home. Over time, other Dutch immigrants (many of whom had settled in Schenectady before the war) started making their own coffee as well. By 1860, there were six small-scale roasters operating in town. The arrival of railways in 1907 made it easier for people to get their hands on quality beans and make their own espresso machines. This also led to an increase in demand for bean-based coffees from businesses and consumers alike. In 1912, Daniel D’Angelo organized a small batch roast competition at his grocery store which quickly became a landmark event in the history of smallbatch coffee brewing in Schenectady. By 1970, there were over twenty small-batch roasters working within one mile of each other in town – making it one of the most highly competitive SmallBatch Coffee industries on Earth! Schenectady (New York) is a city in the U.S. state of New York, located on the Mohawk River in central Albany County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 155,824. The Schenectady-Rochester metropolitan area has a population of 2,558,015 and is one of the fifteen most populous metropolitan areas in United States. The name "Schenectady" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place where deer graze." The first permanent settler in what is now Schenectady was Captain John Montgomery who arrived there on July 8, 1716. He founded Montgomery's Fort on what is now State Street and called it Beal's Point because he had bought land from beaver farmers near Bealsburgh Harbor on Lake Ontario. In 1718, Washington Irving proposed that the Town of Clinton be established at what is today downtown Schenectady to provide a market for goods brought by traders from Kingston and Syracuse. On March 11, 1792, Clinton town commissioners voted to name their new town after General George Washington as part of a resolution honoring his birthday that year. In 18th century America trade passed through this area between Albany and Rochester creating opportunities for commerce and culture along with political instability which led to many uprisings throughout the region including the Mohawk Wars fought by western NY colonists against Native Americans
The city of Schenectady was founded by Dutch settlers in 1624, and became a center for trade and industry. The city's largest employer was the Mohawk Indian tribe, which until 1827 used the site of present-day Schenectady as their hunting ground. In 1827, the United States Congress passed legislation authorizing the federal government to purchase land in New York state for public use, including the area around Schenectady. On July 25, 1828, President James K. Polk announced that he had purchased 1 million acres of land east of Buffalo for $10 million. The following year, on October 11, 1829, the city of Schenectady incorporated as a city under its own charter. In 1830–31, Schenectady experienced a period of rapid growth due to construction of two major canal systems: the Erie Canal and the Hudson River Railroad. This new economic sector attracted more people and businesses to town and helped spur development throughout much of central New York State. By 1840, however, conditions had changed so dramatically that many small businesses failed and poverty began to spread throughout the city. A series of severe epidemics hitSchenectady during this time (the Great Fireof1846), causing significant losses in property and life savings alike; this contributed significantly to levels of social unrest that plagued much of New York City during Reconstruction years later.
