The North Carolina National Guard was created on July 1, 1907. It was the first state-chartered national guard in the United States. The Guardsmen were originally called the State Militia forces of North Carolina, but they were reorganized into a separate force on December 15, 1912 under the command of Colonel George W. Ladd. On November 20, 1915, the Guardsmen became part of the United States Army when it was formed as an arm of World War I. From 1917 to 1919, the Guardsmen served as troops in France and Germany during World War I before returning home to help with demobilization and reconstruction in North Carolina. In 1924, General Joseph Easley ordered all state militias disbanded and all Guardsmen transferred to the United States Air Force for service in World War II. The Air Force also activated a corps of guardsmen known as The Alpha Unit which served in Europe from 1942 until 1945.
