Burlington is a city in The Carolinas located on the southern edge of the state of North Carolina. The population was 17,859 at the 2010 census. Burlington is one of two cities in The Carolinas that are considered major urban areas, the other being Charlotte. It has been called "the cultural and commercial center of The Carolinas" for many years and is home to some of the largest concentrations of art galleries and museums in the country. Burlington also leads North Carolina in job growth over the past ten years. The first settler in what is now Burlington was James Caldwell, who arrived with his family in 1784. He named his town after himself, but it would not be until 1809 that another person would call it Burlington proper - John Lynch did so when he donated land to become a part of Raleigh-Durham Township. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army burned down Durham's courthouse and jail which had recently been erected on Caldwell's land; this event helped spur development within Burlington as an agricultural community which soon became known as "The Cotton Capital of North Carolina". In 1847, Burlington formed a municipal partnership with neighboring Cary to form what would eventually become known as Cary & Burlington Municipal Railway (CB&B RR). CB&B RR became operational on October 1, 1847 and initially ran between Cary and Burlington along present day I-95/I-240 Alternate. On July 1, 1951, CB&B RR was reorganized into NC Railroad Company (AR) due to increasing competition from Interstate 95/I-240 Alternate construction projects across the state during this time period. AR continued serving both cities until its dissolution on May 15th 1984 by mutual consent agreement between CB&BRR successor company Southern Railway Company (SR) and NC Department of Transportation following a series of high profile accidents involving Amtrak trains travelling through Vermont portion DNorman State Road 321 just south of VT boundary between SR 321 east side & SC 274 just west side ). Today there are only traces remaining from CB&B RR including remnants of trackage rights along present day I-95/I-240 Alternate corridor south towards Wilmington then north towards Greensboro before terminating at UNC Line Road near today's Fayetteville airport; all mainline tracks have since been replaced by interstate highway designation system modernized version I-95/I-240 alternate . However much like when they were originally built these days IRR tracks still offer glimpses into an earlier era when rail travel through rural parts Of Northern Carolina was often more popular than driving alone or taking public transportation options available today .
