Durham is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County and was founded by English colonists in 1795. As the largest city within Durham County and the cultural and commercial center for much of eastern Wake County, it has been an important political and economic center in the region for centuries. The metropolitan area had a population of 3,342 as of 2009. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Durham in 1795 when Robert Carrick and his band of Acadians made their way from Georgia via Wilmington to explore this new land that he named New Bern after Prince George's County, Maryland. Tobacco farming began near what is now downtown Durham soon after and became an important part of local economy. In 1825 a post office called Christ Church was established there to serve those living around Chapel Hill on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill; however, because Chapel Hill lacked a convenient Post Office they started to send mail to Durham using horseback riders! By 1875, most people who wished to send mail had moved away from rural areas into towns such as Hillsborough or Raleigh so that one could easily get supplies for their families back home if needed during these difficult times during America's Gold Rush days (1849-1853). In 1915 Duke University became one of several universities located adjacent to downtown Durham on Seminary Road ().
