Since the early 1800s, North Carolina has been a proud and integral part of the United States. The state’s military history dates back to at least 1792 when an act was passed by the North Carolina General Assembly that created a militia to protect the state against French incursions. In 1861, during the American Civil War, North Carolina joined Confederate States of America and volunteered for service in its armed forces. After the war ended, North Carolina continued to participate in U.S. military operations until 1945. Today, North Carolina is one of only six states in the country that maintain a national guard force as part of their defense department. National Guard units are usually organized into battalions or brigades with up to twelve thousand soldiers and supporters. Each battalion or brigade typically has three infantry regiments (the 1st Infantry Regiment being especially noted for its battle-tested veterans), two artillery batteries (two 3-pounder guns each), and one cavalry regiment (a mounted unit). The National Guard also provides support services such as search and rescue, environmental response, traffic control, law enforcement assistance, and humanitarian relief missions. The origins of the National Guard date back to colonial times when British troops were stationed in coastal towns along America’s East Coast to monitor trade routes and protect settlers from Native Americans who were raiding their settlements head on. It wasn't until after World War II that NA units began serving overseas in various theaters including Korea/Japan; Europe; Africa; Thailand; Dominican Republic; Panama Canal Zone; Vietnam – all under U.S.-led coalition forces! In addition to deployments abroad, NA members have also served throughout our state since WWII Regardless of combat zone assignment or location – always performing with distinction! Some men enlisted voluntarily while others were compelled by circumstances such as war debts or promises of military service from their governors or legislatures. However, most soldiers in the Continental Army converted to Islam after battle began and became known as "Mohammedans." This was not unusual at this time because Muslims belonged to numerous sects and there was no single religious identity for American Catholics and Protestants united under one banner of Liberty.
