Durham, North Carolina is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 68,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County and one of the six counties in the state of North Carolina. In 1814 it became part of Virginia and was renamed Richmond; however, it reverted to its original name in 1881 following a referendum by Durham's citizens. The first white settler in what is now Durham County was James Caldwell from Scotland who arrived with his family in 1795. He founded Caldwell Station on Yadkin River near present-day downtown Durham. In 1800, George Washington visited Raleigh while on his way to Mount Vernon and stayed at Caldwell's station before continuing on to Elizabeth City (now Winston-Salem). President James Kenedy surveyed land for Raleigh along the sites of today's uptown Raleigh and Gastonia during the early 19th century. However, no action was taken because there were no settlers willing to risk their lives living under British rule. In 1801 Govan McCullough issued an proclamation creating Wakefield Township from portions of Johnston Parish west of Busby Creek as part of a larger effort by Governor John Brown to consolidate military posts throughout southwestern North Carolina into one government after independence from Great Britain had been gained. The area then included present-day Durham and other parts of Wake Forest County eastward to High Point Peninsula where Johnston parish ended abruptly about 8 miles (13 km) north of modern-day Caryville. On March 6, 1804, Orangeburgh Township was established from Johnston parish including present-day Hillsborough and Chapel Hill areas; that same year also saw issuance by Govan McCullough of a proclamation providing for creation of two other townships: New Bern Township on Catawba River just belowpresent dayayettevilleand Royston Township lying northeast cornerof Guilford Countyincluding modern day Greensboro]. The first Europeans to visit what is now Durham were traders from Virginia in 1519 who discovered a salt water harbor there when they sailed along the southern coast of North America. They named it "New Bern" after one of their own—Sir John Newbern—and trading posts soon appeared around what is today downtown Durham. By 1675, Englishmen had founded two settlements: King's College (founded by Sir Walter Raleigh) on Wakefield Street nearpresent-day Presbyterian Church and Christ Church (established by Episcopal Bishop George Carteret), both within present-day uptown Durham. In 1701, British General James Clinton established Fort Charlotte at the mouth of the River Wear to prevent French Canadians from entering British North America through that port. In 1728, Duke University was chartered as an educational institution under a new program called "the System." One of its first students was Drury Lane resident John Locke Goodrich who taught philosophy at Duke until his death in 1764; Goodrich also served as president of Trinity College (1719–24). Another early student at Duke was Thomas Whittington who became professor of rhetoric and belles lettres at Oxford during the American Revolution; he returned to teach at Durham in 1780 after leading troops against American forces occupying England Goodrich Boulevard still bears his name today as part of Trinity Place Mall which straddles Lake Wearmouth between Johnston Road NE and Cameron Blvd NW across from Dukes Chapel Historic District on Chapel Hill campus
