Fuquay Varina is a small town located in Dare County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1827 by English colonists and named for the Portuguese explorer, Francisco de los Rios Fuquay. The town experienced prosperity during the late 19th century due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation arteries and its status as a port for exporting goods from surrounding counties. However, since the early 21st century, Fuquay Varina has seen declining population and economic fortunes. Today, it remains a small-town community with limited commercial activity and no public services available. Despite this situation, Fuquay Varina retains some vestiges of its former glory including a historical courthouse and several churches which remain popular tourist destinations.
Fuquay Varina was founded in 1793 by Captain John Fuquay and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after the Old English word "fuqua" meaning "fortress." In 1837, the town had a population of 1,100 and was incorporated as a city. The city's first mayor was James B. Lewis. The city experienced some success in the late 1800s and early 1900s when it enjoyed growth in trade and manufacturing. However, during World War I, FuquayVarina suffered from lack of food production which led to poverty and famine. On October 15, 1918, Captain John Fuquay died at sea while serving with the United States Navy in World War I. His wife Elizabeth continued to live in FuquayVarina until her death on November 2, 1924.
