Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. Gastonia is the county seat of Gaston County. The city is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The two largest employers in Gastonia are Research and Development Associates and Nixa-based Midview Health Systems. The first known settlement in what became Gastonia was made on November 12, 1784 by John Crain and James Fenton when they began building a trading post on present day Castleton Street. This early site served as the temporary home of both traders and explorers until a more permanent location could be secured. Gastonboro was founded by General David Hunter on July 3, 1819 as Huntingdon Station after he took over leadership from Captain Elijah Bledsoe during the Battle of Hanging Rock Creek Bridge which helped establish Johnston's Claim for America disputed territory along the Cumberland River Valley between Johnston's Ridge to the east and Cherokee Hills to the west (now part of Charlotte). Hunter named his new settlement for Admiral George Rogers Clark who had visited him during his arduous stay at Fort Hindman on May 9, 1818 while exploring Indian Territory before moving southward towards Chattanooga to take command of all American forces then occupying that region following their victory at Chickamauga Creek on September 17th against British forces under Sir Andrew Jackson. In 1881 however Confederate General Braxton Bragg destroyed most of Huntingdon Station after raiding it while supplies were being collected for an upcoming attack on Yorktown; this event turned out to be one of many strategic blunders committed by Confederate commanders during thebernorthern Virginia Campaign that culminated with Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House some three weeks later. When Union General Ulysses S Grant landed at Fortress Monroe April 10th 1865 he discovered that much like Jackson had done several years earlier when he liberated Chattanooga - taking advantage of Federal vulnerabilities including lack of communications system - much South Carolinian infrastructure still remained intact despite repeated Union efforts to capture or destroy it since Lord Cornwallis' evacuation from Richmond days earlier ( including destroying bridges over Yadkin River). Consequently Grant ordered Lieutenant Colonel Charles Hokebridge to secure both sides' lines within two miles (3 km)of each other along Bladen Road northwest of downtown Gastonburg; this accomplished through construction of earthworks which remain today visible just north and east Of Interstate 85 near mile marker 261US Route 1 concurrent with nearby US Highway 421 Business routes 4 & 5 / Atkinson Rd.- Now US Highway 711 just off I-85 exit 157A / Old US Highway 421 Business route 4 & 5 access road
