Gastonia is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, and the county seat of Gaston County. The population was 25,515 at the 2010 census. Gastonia was founded on July 4, 1777 by General John Forbes as an outpost on his march from Scotland to Yorktown during the American Revolution. In 1853, Gaston became one of thirty-six counties in North Carolina to become part of the Union when it seceded from Virginia. At that time, Gaston's wealth came from cotton plantations and coal mines; however, since 1957 its economy has been based largely on manufacturing and services such as health care and education (particularly healthcare). Gastonia is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,691 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Gaston County. The land that now makes up Gastonia was first settled by white Americans in 1795 as part of the Great Cherokee Expedition under Colonel James Moores. In 1819, Gastonia became one of two towns in what would become Gaston County when it was created from parts of Randolph and Cabarrus Counties. The city's growth began with its location on the Yadkin River; during World War II, it played an important role as a supply stop for military forces fighting in Europe. In recent decades, Gastonia has become known for its medical research and development programs, which have led to many technological advances such as virtual reality technology and machine learning. Gastonton's history goes back even further than that - Native Americans were living here before European settlers arrived. Some of the earliest evidence suggests that there were people living around present-day Gastonia when British explorer John Lawson explored the area in 1795 while on his way to find a new route to India through South Carolina. Lawson named the area "Gaston" after General Arthur Stedman gastronomy - he described such things as boiled green beans and pork chops available at local restaurants then still common today (although not quite so popular). In 1819, following Indian Removal Act – which ended British rule over North America – most of what makes up present-day Gaston County originated from Cherokee land grants given to various tribes by President James Kenedy Washington in order to encourage their assimilation into American society. One grant specifically included land east of the Yadkin River along present-day Macon Street – including much of what would later make up Gaston City limits – making it one of only a few places in North Carolina where Cherokee people could live side by side with white settlers without fear of retribution or legal challenge from their former tribal leaders. The townspeople quickly realized that they had found their perfect location on the banks of the Yadkin River; by 1830, they had built a series of log homes just downstream from where they currently stand (now known as Old Fort Drive). Over time, more homes were constructed on both sides of Macon Street; eventually all but one block south thereof became home to residents until 1973 when downtown redevelopment closed off Macon Street completely creating Gibson Road once again within walking distance for all manner of businesses and services unavailable downriver. Lackadaisical planning decisions during those days likely account for why much valuable real estate within current-day Gastoni City limits remains undeveloped today despite having been offered numerous times throughout history multiple times over multiple developers’ offers: finally becoming available via condemnation proceedings following downtown redevelopment in 2003 did so due largely to advances made since then regarding transportation infrastructure availability proximate thereto (e.g., interstate highways) making it possible for developers like Power Constructions Inc./Eaton Homes Inc./Forrester Realty/Reed Smith Development Company now proposing construction atop portions thereof less than one mile away potential urban sprawl constrained developments feasible upon commencement thereof; furthermore this type annexation process provides opportunity for public participation via eminent domain review should developer choose not engage therein
Gastonia was founded in 1736 by Gaston Robertson, a Scottish settler. The town served as the seat of government for Rutherford County until 1827. It moved to Charlotte in 1837 and remains there today.
