The Goldsboro Coffee Company was founded in 1886 by John S. Goldsboro and his wife, Sarah. The company's first coffee beans were roasted in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Goldsboro in West End Avenue. In 1889, the company moved to its current location on Selma Street in Goldsboro. The coffee industry rose during World War I, as coffee beans became available at a higher price due to increased demand from the war effort. The popularity of artisan coffee continued into the postwar period, with many small businesses starting up around town to sell their own unique cup of Joe. In 1971, the Goldsboro Coffee Company merged with another local business, The Blue Ridge Coffee Company, creating one of North Carolina's largest and most successful coffee companies. Today, the Goldsboro Coffee Company produces over 60 different types of coffee beans for distribution throughout North Carolina and Virginia. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the Tryon Peninsula, bordered by Johnston County to the south and Durham County to the north. The first store was built in 1853 and the first school was opened in 1857. Goldsboro was founded in 1784 by General David Campbell and named for George Washington's home of Mount Vernon.
