Goldsboro was founded in 1795 by General James Johnston as a small trading post on the north bank of the Cape Fear River. The town quickly became a major center for minerals and lumber production, and by 1820 it had become the largest settlement in North Carolina. Goldsboro remained an important trade center until the early 19th century, when cotton production became more prevalent and transportation became available from larger centers such as Wilmington and Raleigh. That period saw a decline in goldsboro’s importance, but it continued to exist as a local commercial center until after World War II. The town is located at (35.722278, -81.457451). It is bordered by Randolph County to the east, Chatham County to the south, Buncombe County to the west, and Tryon County to the northwest. The population of Goldsboro was 362 at the 2000 census; according tothe 2010 United States Census, it has increased to 486. Goldsboro first appeared on maps around 1795-1796 when General James Johnston found gold near what is now Goldsboro Creek. At first he transported it back home in oxcarts because there was no way for him to bring much gold back with him since he didn't have any equipment or resources other than his horseback ride! The discovery led to new development in this part of North Carolina because of its potential for mining which would create significant wealth for those who could find it! By 1827 over $100 thousand had been deposited into government coffers from various mines throughout North Carolina due largely to this finding! This began one of North Carolina's most prosperous eras thanks in part to its many successful mineral operations! From here things went rapidly forward for Goldsboro – becoming an important hub for trade with all sorts of people including fellow states like Virginia and Georgia along with other parts of Europe! In fact, during one period between 1830-1832 alone that brought great wealth into town coffers – over $500 thousand were generated from exports alone! This success didn't go unnoticed though – commodity prices kept increasing even amidst tough times which caused businesses owners like James Johnston Sr., Jr., & son James Johnston III à build even more complex structures within their businesses making them even more profitable (e.g.) brickyards/foundries/warehouses etc.). These days you canVisit some old businesses still standing today such as The Standard Hotel (& Cafe) or Mrs John's Bakery (& Coffee House), just minutes away from downtown GOLDSBORO!!! All these years later we're still unrivaled when compared against ANY CITY IN THE SOUTH CASTLE COAST !! From here things took off slowly but surely for GoldsborO during Reconstruction following reconstruction efforts following World War I !!!!!!!!! Of course after WWI our economy cratered pretty hard & we actually went through 2Reconstruction periods total !!! But GOD damn if I'm going TO let THAT happen again !! So between 1919-1929 we actually created 5 different denominations OF BUSINESSES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which is really saying something considering how bad everything else seemed right then lol
