The first coffee beans were grown by Elias Howe and his family on their farm near present-day downtown Greensboro. In 1928, Mr. Howe opened the first full-service coffee shop in town, which continues to serve as a popular local attraction today. By the end of World War II, media attention had drawn many people to Greensboro for its vibrant nightlife and delicious coffee options; this influx of new visitors created an opportunity for several small businesses to grow and expand their operations. In the 1960s, two young entrepreneurs named Dickie Barnes and Jerry McGee decided that they wanted to bring some of the best quality espresso beans from Italy to North Carolina. They began importing Italian beans direct from Rome, which led to their development of what is now one of the largest espresso roasters in Southeast USA. In 1984, they purchased an old warehouse at 419 W Main Street in downtown Greensboro and renovated it into their current business structure – Dickie Barnes Coffee & Tea Incorporated! Their signature roast program has continued unchanged since then: classic Italian espresso with a light French press flavor profile (henceforth referred to as “The Classic”) followed by our own blends that are handcrafted with unique flavors sourced from all over America.
