The Hendersonville Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's 8th Wing. The wing is responsible for providing air support for U.S. military operations in Afghanistan and other parts of the world. It also manufactures and tests new aircraft and equipment, as well as provides training to USAF members. The base was founded on November 1, 1942 by Maj. Gen. James Biddle and Lt. Cols. Edwin Epps and Claude Adernberger at a site near Hendersonville in western North Carolina. In 1945, the 8th Wing moved from Camp Beall to RAF Coningsby on England's Isle of Wight where it conducted combat operations until 1947 when it returned to Hendersonville under Ninth Air Force jurisdiction after World War II ended with Japan's surrender. In 1951, the then Eighth Air Force activated at RAF Coningsby and assigned the nucleus of its present-day 8th Wing which had been stationed at RAF Halesworth sinceactivated June 1944 as part of Operation "Varsity". The wing flew Curtis C-54s until 1958 when it converted to Convair CV-8s; however, flying collided with each other during ground school maneuvers that led Eighth AF commander General Curtis LeMay to remark "the damned things won't fly." Finally on July 17, 1960, all CV-8s were grounded due to an engine failure in a standard flight practice accident that resulted in one death and thirteen injuries). The wing reequipped with F-84F Thunderjets beginning on August 29th 1961 but these were not accepted by pilots because they were considered too expensive (the first squadron into service being TACA Vultures). As a result of this decision General LeMay placed all wings within fighter groups which would provide more centralized control over their airspace while still permitting freedom of movement among squadrons within groups while conducting tactical missions outside group area [1]. Biddle became Deputy Commander Ninth AF on October 15th 1961; he succeed General LeMay who died May 9th 1962 after serving three terms as Commanding General Eighth AF [2]. On December 3rd 1962 Brigadier General Frank Pohl assumed command from him effective November 2nd 1962 replacing Major General Don Armstrong who had been Vice Commander Ninth AF since March 1st 1963 [3]. General Pohl was transferred from his previous command role at Wright Patterson AFB Ohio where he served as Chief Master Sergeant in charge of aviation supplies storage 21st Troop Carrier Squadron (Airmen) which operated Lockheed L–16A Starfighters out of Dayton Army National Guard Base] In 1966 he succeeded BrigadierGeneral Frank Pohl who retired effective September 30th 1966 [4] following two years commands including duty as Headquarters 10 th Fighter Wing operational status change center commander during Vietnam deployments IFR strikes against North Vietnamese agricultural production targets] His last position was commanding general 4 th Tactical Fighter Wing - located at Lackland AFB TX where he retired January 7 th 1970 effective September 30th 1969 succeeding Major General John Momyer who had commanded 5 th Tactical Fighter Wing - location at Seymour Johnson AFB NC prior thereto ] Today there are no active duty USAF units stationed within Hendersonville AFB although portions have been used hosting detachments/units deployed elsewhere such as McChord AFB WA through use of facilities there[5][6][7][8][9][10], Eglin ADT Station FL[11], Robins AFB GA[12], McGuire Afb Field NJ[13],[14],[15],[16], Dyess AFB TX[17], McConnell AB TX[18], Barksdale AB LA[19],[20]''.

The Hendersonville Air Force Base gift history begins in 1942 when the base was established. In 1947, the United States Air Force awarded a gift to Hendersonville for its remodeling and expansion. The first home of the 1st Bombardment Wing was built on this site in 1951. The wing moved to RAFconley in 1957 and changed its name to the 15th Bombardment Wing. It was here that John F. Kennedy was killed in 1961 while flying from RAFconley to Raleigh-Durham Airport. In 1973, the wing moved again and became part of II Bomber Command, which merged with III Bomber Command in 1978. The 15th BW retired from active duty in 1992 but still operates out of Hendersonville as a Museum unit providing education about bombers and their history.
Hendersonville is a city in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Henderson County. The name "Henderson" is from English settlers who named it for General Henderson (1764-1824), an American Revolutionary War general and hero of the Battle of Saratoga. The first European to visit what is now Hendersonville was Captain John Comte, who landed there on July 3, 1796 with his ship "Citizen". He explored present-day Henderson County and named it after himself. In 1802 Colonel James Longstreet founded a log cabin town called Clinton on the Cumberland River near modern day Campbellsboro. In 1806 Colonel John Pope established Pope's Station on Hiwassee Lake in central Henderson County as a trading post and post office. George Washington Carver located his first farm in what is now western Henderson County in 1839. In 1872 A&P grocery store built by J.B. Wills opened in downtown which became one of the largest grocery stores west of the Alleghenies until its closure in 1984 by Safeway Corporation . A fire destroyed Wills' building Oct 8, 1951 and has been cited as one of America's most Cozy Fires . Hendersonville experienced growth during World War II with military housing developments being constructed such as Camp Blanding Training Center north of downtown . Hendersonville is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Hendersonville were Native Americans who called it "Mingo" because of its abundance of manioc crops. The area became a location for slave labor during the early 1800s due to its strategic location along the Catawba River as a transportation and trade center. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson's army made its way through Hendersonville on their march from Charlotte to Kinston. General James Kenedy (1784-1864) had been aide-de-camp to Jackson and was instrumental in building up this region around Hendersonville. On November 12, 1819, Kenedy donated land to the town for use as a public square and schoolhouse; present day downtown Hendersonville was founded on this site. In 1830, Captain John Smeaton built an log cabin on lands which he donated to the town for use as his office and storehouse; today's courthouse complex stands on these same sites. Hendersonville's first post office opened in 1837 under the name Easton Creek Post Office; it later changed its name to Easton and served until 1907 when it became known as HendersonvilletPostoffice again before becoming part of the current city government in 1924). During World War II, local farmers produced large quantities of food that went intoETC camps across America after Pearl Harbor; many people still remember eating fresh produce from home while living in tents or huts near Camp Igloo near Fort Bragg during World War II (the tornado Outbreak Series killed 56 people within 3 days – one third of all those killed by tornadoes that year).
