The Hendersonville Army Post is one of the few remaining military installations left in North Carolina. Early prepared to assault its walls with 5500 men under his command shouldJohnson fail to surrender within 20 minutes. Withdrawing prior to dawn on December 7th, 1865 (just 10 minutes before daylight), Longstreet's troops found themselves fighting an enemy they could not beat: 2200 men strong and backed up by artillery fire from outside the fortifications! With only a single hour of daylight remaining before their supplies would run out and their position would become untenable (and likely surrendered), Longstreet ordered his men back inside; just as reinforcements arrived from Wilmington! His bold decision saved HendersonvilleArmy Post from destruction but also cost him dearly: 300 casualties amongst his own forces alone! This event has come down as one of America’s bloodiest battles ever fought - yet it also served as a turning point for Johnston’s war goals in North Carolina!
