Hendersonville is an unincorporated community in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Hendersonville was settled by Scots-Irish Catholics in the late 18th century as a result of land grants from King George III. In 1881, two brothers, John and James Henderson, opened a store on what is now Main Street in Hendersonville. In 1886 they built a sawmill on Catawba Creek to provide local industry with lumber for export. The Henderson family operated their mills until the early 20th century when logging stopped and milling became less important due to competition from other industries such as coal mining and agriculture. The first post office in Hendersonville was established in 1892; it continued operation until 1959. The name "Hendersonville" originated from James Molineux's purchase of a tract of land around present day Catawba Creek in 1799. After purchasing this land, Molineux named his new settlement after his father-in-law (the postmaster) who had helped him get the land: John Henderson Post Office Park). A general store built near present day Catawba Lake started operations by 1840 and would continue operating into the mid 19th century; however it would not have any impact on the growth or development of town because most goods were bought and sold through more centralized locations like Raleigh or Wilmington which also had stores at that time.
