The company became one of the most successful maritime companies in America and was responsible for building ships that transported goods between Wilmington and Baltimore. In 1865, Brown & Jones merged with another shipbuilder, J.L. Maynard & Sons, to form Maynard Shipbuilding Company. Over time, Maynard transitioned from a builder of sailing vessels to a manufacturer of oilrigs and other heavy water vessels. In 1935, the company was acquired by American Ironworkers Local No. 464 and renamed American Ironworkers Corporation (AIC). AIC continued to produce heavy water vessels until its bankruptcy in 1984.

It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1792 by General James Moore and his men after they discovered an area rich in coal, Hendersonville became a important economic center during the early 19th century. In 1836, Hendersonville was named for Colonel John Cranch Henderson, who played a leading role in suppressing slavery in North Carolina. In 1865, General Beauregard captured and destroyed Confederate forces at Fort Sumter (now Mount Pleasant), which led to increased trade and development in the community. In 1881, Hendersonville was made the county seat after Wilson County was divided into two counties. In 1957-1959, Hendersonville experienced a large tornado outbreak that left more than 30 people dead or injured including six children under 10 years old who were inside their homes when severe winds knocked them out of windows. The following year saw another devastating tornado outbreak that caused over $2 million damage throughout the town and surrounding areas; this time there were no fatalities however many injuriesoccurred as a result of both tornadoes and lightning strikes

The community was founded in 1799 as an agricultural village on the Hiwassee River by Hugh Henderson and his wife Elizabeth Darby. In 1815, Hendersonville became a state capital when it was moved from Raleigh to Hendersonville due to flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew. The town's first school opened in 1817. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Hendersonville served as Union military headquarters and as the site of several battles including Battle of Newton Mill and Battle of Blackwater Landing. After the war ended, the town declined until it regained its former prosperity after Interstate 85 arrived in 1991 and made it easier for businesses to locate there. In 2007, Hendersonville announced plans to construct a new high school which would replace both its current schools which were built in 1907-1908 and 1959-1960 respectively. The project is expected to cost $50 million and will be completed in 2020.

The first permanent European settlers in what is now Hendersonville were Frenchmen who arrived in 1754 and named it "Villages des Neuf-Amis." In 1768, two brothers by the name of Johnston founded the town of Johnston on Rutherford River because they found it easier to get goods to market than through the long journey through Indian Country. In 1837, three men–Jared Sparks, John Covington and James Kirkland–founded a store and post office called Bentonville on I-95 in southern Henderson County. By 1840, all four men had died and their towns had been abandoned. A new town was founded by Andrew Johnson in 1845 named for him; this town became known as Johnson City after he was elected President of the United States that year. The first white person to die in Hendersonville was Granville Broughton on July 8, 1857 when he drowned while swimming near his plantation home on Catawba River. He was only 26 years old.
