In 1899, a new water tower and pump station were constructed on Third Street just south of downtown to help with water rationing during World War I. The town also developed its own streetcar system in 1925 and annexed neighboring Pinecrest the following year. After World War II ended, many businesses closed or moved out as technology advanced; however, several new businesses have since opened up around downtown including an arts center and movie theater complex known as The Venetian which opened in 2007 and has been home to major music festivals such as Lollapalooza and Summer Sonic since 2009. Hendersonville is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hendersonville's history dates back to 1792 when it was part of Cherokee Nation and was named for General James Henderson, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. In 1837, the town became part of Gaston County when that county was created from parts of Vance and Gaston counties. The first post office in Hendersonville was established on October 25, 1829, by J.C. Hutcheson. The first store in Hendersonville had been built by John Browning in 1830. In 1836, Averill Harrell founded a sawmill which continued operations until 1860; he also operated a gristmill and flour mill until his death in 1870. At this time there were only two stores and one blacksmith shop in town; by 1880 there were ten businesses with a total population of 2,500 people living in Hendersonville proper and 3 miles (4 km) outside the town limits. By 1900 there were twenty-one businesses with a total population of 10,000 people living within city limits and four miles (6 km) outside them
