The first white person to live in Hendersonville was James Fenton in 1824. The town was founded by General Nathaniel Lyon and his family on October 12, 1826 as a result of the Battle of Cowpens. In 1854, General WILLIAM HENDERSON'S campaign against Union forces resulted in the death of several hundred soldiers and civilians at the Battle of New Bern after which Hendersonville became an important military post along both sides of the issue during the Civil War. Hendersonville saw heavy fighting during both campaigns and many homes were destroyed or damaged in battle including that of General John BANKS who lost an arm at New Bern. The modern era for Hendersonville began with its incorporation as a city on November 2nd, 1907 under then Mayor SAMUEL WILKINSONs leadership. During World War II it became one of two towns located within proximity to Fort Bragg (the other being Raleigh) for troops stationed there for use in combat; it also hosted numerous events such as folk dancing contests and country fairs which helped generate tourist traffic. Afterward, growth slowed but never stopped until recently when development has resumed throughout downtown core with completion of new restaurants/bars/shops/, high-rise apartments/condos/, multi-family dwellings/multi-purpose stadiums etc..
