The history of the Hendersonville Police Department can be traced back to 1892. The first policeman in the department was Charles S. White, who was appointed on November 1, 1892. Today, the Hendersonville Police Department has an active and diverse squad of officers that serve the citizens of Hendersonville and surrounding communities. The department's mission is to provide quality law enforcement services for the residents of our community through a public servant approach. Our officers are committed to being responsive to our residents' needs and working together as a team to ensure justice for all. In 1947, Hendersonville became one of five towns in North Carolina that joined forces with Raleigh to form the North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association (NCLOA). NCLOA helped develop policies and procedures for law enforcement in North Carolina and helped build relationships with other state agencies. As part of this partnership, NCLOA donated equipment to Hendersonville police department which allowed us to become one of the most advanced law enforcement units in North Carolina. Throughout its history, NCLOA has always been supportive of local governments as they work towards their goals while providing liaison between state and local officials needed for effective policing. In 1990, NCLOA bestowed upon Hendersonville its prestigious "Service Award" recognizing exceptional service by members within their organization during the previous year. This award is given annually By The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

Hendersonville is the county seat of Henderson County. The first white pioneers to arrive in what is now Henderson County were Colonel John Henderson and his family who arrived in 1796 from Virginia. The village of Hendersonville was platted on November 14, 1802 by General David Shoup and other developers as part of the Charlotte-Wilmington Railway company's construction project across central North Carolina. By 1850, over 100 settlers had established themselves in what is now Henderson County and within one year, the courthouse had been built. In 1851, a post office was organized with Winton as its name; it remained operational until 1972. Since its establishment as a town, Hendersonville has seen many Significant events including: In 1861–1862 Confederate Brigadier General Jubal Early fought an aborted attempt by Union forces under Ulysses S Grant to capture Raleigh during the American Civil War Battle of Raleigh (or Spring Hill). Early's force included 2nd South Carolina Infantry Regiment (1st Brigade), 3rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment (2nd Brigade), ConfederateTennessee Brigade commanded by Major General James Longstreet and 8th Alabama Infantry Regiment led by 1st Lieutenant Colonel George Ewell resulted from a strategic blunder that allowed Union forces under Grant to surprise them at their camp near Hillsboro just west of downtown Raleigh while they were attending dinner at Fort Bragg northeast of town - this battle would eventually be known as Battle of Gainesville which ended up resulting in Over 30 killed/captured/disappeared among both sides with no significant gain for either side

In 1821, Captain John Sevier founded what would become Hendersonvillette on land he purchased from chief Natchez. The town grew rapidly after Sevier's purchase, and by 1830 it had a population of around 1,500 people. By 1840 it had reached its present size – with an estimated population of 10,000 – thanks to the growth of agriculture and mining in the area. During Reconstruction in America following the Civil War (1861-1865), HendersonVILLE played an important role in helping to rebuild southern America. Many Union veterans who were discharged from service moved back into their home states or returned to live among their families – some settling permanently in HendersonVILLE. This period is often referred to as "the Golden Age" of American education because so many great thinkers and educators came from here including Booker T Washington (a native son), Wistar William Graham Woodson (founderof Radcliffe College), Jeptha Davis Millikan (creatorof ultraviolet light microscopy), Harry Emerson Fosdick (founderof Macy's department store), Roy Wilkins Ames ( Editor-in-Chief at Life magazine) – all while residency was required only for men born between 1820 and 1875!
