The community was named for General John C. Henderson, who fought in the American Revolution and then helped to establish the modern state of North Carolina. The town was founded by planters in 1795 as a trading post on "Henderson's Ford" on the Yadkin River. By 1810 it had become an important transportation and communication center for the area due to its location at the junction of two long trails that led from Charlotte to Raleigh and from Wilmington to Durham. In 1815, Hendersonville became one of five townships within Graham County when that county was created from part of Cherokee County. In 1830, local farmers began planting cotton in what is now downtown Hendersonville. This new industry soon developed into a large commercial sector which attracted many people and businesses to Hendersonville during this time period. By 1840, most of downtown had been built and business had grown so much that it necessitated development north of Main Street into what is now known as "The Hill". This original north-south street pattern still exists today with several blocks located between High Street and Orange Avenue serving as retail districts today while other blocks are used for various government buildings such as county courthouse and jail complex (now known as Hickory Hall). During WWII much activity took place here including heavy manufacturing related to war production such as tanks and planes but also services such as healthcare or accounting research laboratories etc.. After World War II much interstate commerce passed through here resulting in increased development along Interstate 85 until Interstate 95 superseded it about 1970s when Interstate 235 replaced I-85/I-95 south of town limits making it more difficult for businesses within walking distance of each other without relocation possible
