Jacobus Cornelius Key, better known as Jacksonville, was a United States Senator from North Carolina. He served from 1901 to 1907 and again from 1911 to 1913. He is also the namesake of Jacksonville State University. Key was born in nearby New Bern on October 15, 1851, the son of planter John Key and his wife Elizabeth (née Caldwell). He attended public schools in his home town before attending Amherst College where he earned an A.B. in 1875. After graduation, Key worked for two years as a clerk at the Amherst News office before moving to Raleigh in 1877 to become an editor with the Raleigh Republican newspaper. In 1880, Key married Ida Cushing Farrand and relocated to Jacksonville where he began working for the Jacksonville Daily News. In 1888, he became publisher of the Evening Journal which he renamed The Florida Times-Union after becoming governor of Florida that year. In 1893, Key ran for election as a Democrat to the Fifty-eighth United States Congress but lost by one vote against incumbent Republican Congressman David Salyer. In 1895 Keys made unsuccessful run for reelection as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh United States Congress but won re-election easily with over 70% of the vote as Governor Moseley appointed him Collector at Large of Internal Revenue under President Grover Cleveland's administration while key was serving in Congress. He next ran unsuccessfully for U.S Senate in 1902 but won by 4 percentage points over Republican challenger Willis Haysman who had been endorsed by campaign manager James Gaffney Sr.. While serving as Collector at Large under Cleveland, Key also helped found and chaired several civic organizations including The Civic League of Jacksonville and The Progressives’ Club which later merged into The Democratic National Committee during Franklin D Roosevelt's first term in office (1932 - 1945). After leaving government service following Franklin D Roosevelt's inauguration as President on January 20th 1933, Keys resumed his career as editor of The Florida Times Union where he remained until his death on November 9th 1950 at age 86 years old after many years spent traveling throughout North America promoting maritime trade interests through his Maritime Museum located adjacent to downtown Jacksonville always preserving local history within sight regardless media blackout periods during World War II when most all maritime museums were closed due military secrecy regulations established during that time period

It also had a major railroad network which allowed goods to be shipped rapidly from eastern Canada and Europe into the United States.
