Kannapolis, North Carolina (population: 106,000) is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina. The community was founded in 1799 by General James Wilkinson and the Rev. John Potter. Kannapolis was named for Colonel George Kannapee, who fought with the Revolution against British forces. The original courthouse and many of the buildings still standing were built in 1824-25 by Drury and Company. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century as cotton farming became more common in South Carolina and Georgia, resulting in an increase in population from about 10,000 to over 100,000 by 1860. During Reconstruction efforts after the Civil War, Kannapolis prospered as a center of black politics and business. In 1876 it became one of the first towns to be linked directly to Charlotte through a system of streetcars called "The Belt Line." At its height however, violence and economic decline caused Kannapolis' population to decline until it reached its current level of around 106,000 in 2000.
Kannapolis was founded in 1788 by General George Washington as a trading post on the Catawba River. The area that is now Kannapolis was first occupied by the Cherokee and then by the Yankees. In 1815, Kannapolis became a part of North Carolina. It was here that Governor Tryon met with President James K. Polk to discuss the issue of slavery in North Carolina. In 1886, Kannapolis became the capital of North Carolina.
