When white settlers began moving into this area and starting churches, schools, and businesses, some Cherokees decided to move back eastward into their traditional lands near Mount Vernon in Virginia or westward into what are today Oklahoma and Texas. In 1861, when Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, General John Custer led his regiment up onto King's Mtn., where they fought a bloody battle with Union troops attempting to take control of the mountain. This event helped spur on Confederate efforts throughout much of Northeastern South Carolina during the war effort and also contributed significantly to Queen Elizabeth II's decision not recognize Confederate States Of America following its defeat at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865.) After Reconstruction ended in 1865 and African Americans regained full civil rights within Southern United States through protests and lawsuits against state governments' discriminatory policies, many Cherokees chose relocation back acrossstate lines rather than live under white European rule again.
