Mount Holly was a small town in eastern North Carolina when it first began brewing coffee. The first coffee beans were brought over by Dutch settlers in the early 1700s. Coffee was grown on plantations until the late 1800s, and Mount Holly became one of the leading coffee towns in America.
Mount Holly is a small town located in the Granville County seat of Rocky Mount. The population was 2,142 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent white people to settle in what is now Mount Holly were Quakers who arrived there in 1776. They built a meeting house on Bushnell Hill and continued to live there until 1813 when they moved out of state because of religious persecution by the British government. In 1814, General James Van Zandt, commander of United States forces in North Carolina, set up his headquarters here and began operations against Native American groups operating within Cherokee Nation boundaries. In 1816 he skirmished with Cherokee Indians near present-day Rocky Mount; after this battle, the area became known as "Van Zandt's Folly" because no Europeans had ever discovered it and it was thought to be uninhabitable due to its high mountains and thick trees. In 1830, surveyors mapped what is now Mount Holly and made recommendations for its development which included the erection of a schoolhouse on Bushnell Hill as well as an isolation road connecting Rocky Mount with Charlotte via Union Springs (now Huntersville). In 1838 construction began on both schools; however, due to financial trouble brought on by economic recession, both schools failed to open until 1840. The school building still stands today and is used as a museum; the isolation road has been converted into a street name. Shortly after founding her organization called The Female Bible Society in 1863, Martha Stewart decided that she should move from New York City where she was living with her father into what would become the then newly founded Confederate States of America (CSA). She purchased land north of Roanoke Rapids in Granville County for $5 per acre ($140 total) which would eventually becomeMount Holly. Stewart's home still stands today across from Valley View Elementary School - one of only two buildings remaining from her original community/townsite plan which lays out other smaller communities throughout North Carolina along Ridge Road between Wilson Chapel and Monroe Station (the other being Gastonia). Over time many changes took placewithin Mount Holly including annexation by Gastonia County during Reconstruction following Civil War; this event increased residents' relianceon local farmsteads while also contributing to increased political power wielded by mountain villagers over lower valley residents during their heyday around late 1800s-early 1900s

It remained a slaveholding community until 1850 when all slaves were emancipated. Mount Holly was known for its cooperative spirit and strict moral code which prohibited alcohol and other immoral activities. The town's dominant economic activity until the 20th century was agriculture with small manufacturing sectors developing beginning in the late 19th century as textile mills started up nearby. Today, Mount Holly is a small but thriving community that retains many of its historical features including its folklore and architecture dating back to colonial days. The town has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and offers tours both publically accessible and private events through its Chamber of Commerce annually (www.mounthollync.org).
