Salisbury is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1792 and named after George Washington's home state of Virginia. The first post office in Salisbury opened on February 15, 1821. In 1870, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 4,021. Salisbury is a small town in North Carolina, United States. It is the seat of Salisbury County and was founded in 1827 by General James McNeil. The community was named after the castle where Prince George, Duke of Cambridge was born in 1740. Salisbury has a population of about 16,000 people and is the county seat for both Salisbury County and Craven County. The first settlers to what would become Salisbury were farmers who arrived from eastern North Carolina in 1827. They erected a cabin on present-day Main Street, which served as their home until they donated it to the government for use as a courthouse in 1836. In that year, Lieutenant Colonel John Fayette Proctor became the first Mayor of Salisbury when he won an election against incumbent John Gentry. From 1840 to 1865, all four members of the U.S. House of Representatives from NC were from Salisbury;[1] this event made it one of the most influential communities in northwestern North Carolina during this time period. In 1870, local entrepreneur Jno Pemberton developed what would be known as "Pemberton's Mills". This milling company produced flour and other goods for local retailers until 1906 when it merged with McCormick & Co., becoming one of America's largest textile companies.[2] The mill closed in 1966 but reopened as an antique dealership in 1982 before closing again several years later due to lack of business opportunities. Today, there are only ruins remaining outmoded mills dotting rural stretches throughout much of central North Carolina – something that cannot be said about much else within these boundaries since industrialization began more than 200 miles away at Greensboro (the city now part of Charlotte). One feature unique to Salisbury during its early years was its very tight-knit community feel which continues today among its citizens despite some difficult times over the years such as losing its main sourcebookerver provider while still being host to numerous high school sports games each year (a tradition that still continues today at nearby High Point High School).[3] Despite these challenges however, through hard work and dedication over many decades residents have managed to keep their traditions alive even when times have been tough; something that truly sets thiscommunity apart from other similar places throughout our region!
