Thomasville is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,005 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Macon–Lenoir Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1819 by white settlers who named it for Thomas Pemberton, an American Revolutionary War general. Thomasville's rich history can be traced back to 1819 when white settlers arrived in what is now Buncombe County and named the area "Thomasville" after General Thomas Pemberton. There were no Native Americans living in this region at that time so the name likely comes from an early European settlement name such as Tomskale or Tomisteo. In 1828, General James Ewing moved his army from Fayetteville to Buncombe County to help suppress a slave uprising there and discovered numerous Africans working on plantations nearby. He ordered all freed slaves brought to Thomasville for safekeeping and began calling the community "Ewingtown." A few years later, Randolph Fox built a log cabin here which served as the first courthouse in what would become Thomasville. In 1834, cotton farmer John Suggs erected a large frame building known as the Courthouse Annex which served as county courthouse until 1904 when it was replaced by the current structure next door. The town saw its first significant growth during Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865). As African Americans found new ways to contribute to Southern society through blacksmithing and agriculture, they became more integrated into local society than ever before. This process of integration didn't happen overnight however; it took many years and often featured violence and conflict between races because access to education and jobs was often limited for African Americans living below poverty lines. During this time period, many businesses were opened up by blacks who invested in land or city development instead of staying behind closed doors with their own families. These days, much of downtown Thomasville remains untouched by commercialism but several local organizations continue to thrive thanks largely to volunteerism: The Black Heritage Museum (founded 1984), The African American Chamber of Commerce (founded 1990), The NAACP Children’s History Museum (founded1998), and First Baptist Church of Thomasvillle Branch #2 (founded1996). Additionally, much has been done since 2000 renovation/restoration of Main Street including resurfacing lanes from English mossy surface all the way down to bedrock; installation of new sidewalks; replacement/repair/refurbishment of historical baptismal fonts; enlargement/redesignation/realignmentof several streets including Market Street corridor connecting downtown with Tryon Square; addition/installationof public art projects throughout downtown; among others!
