The Thomasville National Guard was organized on October 3, 1892. The organization was chartered as the North Carolina Guard by a state law passed on December 12, 1892. The first commander appointed to the unit was Colonel John C. Smith who served from 1893-1894. On November 15, 1895, the Thomasville National Guard Museum opened in downtown Thomasville with an exhibit of military artifacts from the local area including uniforms and equipment collected during World War I and II. In 1896 the museum moved to its current location at 10 East Court Street. On May 1, 1938, all units of the North Carolina Guard were consolidated into one command under Lieutenant General James M. Gavin when he became commanding general for all military services in North Carolina. One of the earliest gifts given to the national guard was a field artillery piece donated by J W Hoggs Company No 7 of Charlotte, North Carolina which had been mobilized for service in World War I and had been stored at their old plant on Wilson Boulevard since 1915 when it had been decommissioned and left there as part of a munitions dump. After World War II ended there were plans to re-equip theThomasville NGF with modern weaponry but these plans never came to fruition because of budget cuts made by President Franklin D Roosevelt during his New Deal administration in 1933 which caused troop reductions throughout America combined with lack of demand for military items after WWII led to increased production capacity within American industry and overall economic recession that started in 1933 known as "the Great Depression". In 1957 Governor Ross Perot announced plans to disband both state militia forces across America due to budgetary problems caused by Interstate Highway construction projects while also announcing new legislation that would allow citizens' militias called "National Guards" or "State Defense Forces" (SDF) similar to Regular Army battalions formed during World War II under Project 41000 series created by Douglas MacArthur thereby creating close links between American civilian volunteer militias and US Armed Forces members stationed abroad while also allowing civilians recruited into state militaries subject onlyto certain regulations set forth by governor per program plan decreed prior approval from then Secretary of Defense Robert A Dulles Jr who concurrently headed Department Of Defense). In 1959 Captain Floyd Koppenberger donated an FN P7 rifle grenade launcher model M1A1 Carbine assault weapon system (GAS) which ammunition type is .357 Magnum rounds becoming one of early gifts given away through Operation Goodyear Owenskidney collection/research project beginning in 1963 overseen/sponsored/directed by then NC State University Chancellor William Fenton Hodges resulting in donation (alongwith other items) being housed at Hodges Presidential Palace until 1984 when it moved back into NC State University Chancellor's Office where it remains today among other donations still housed there such as numerous uniforms formerly worn by Confederate soldiers killed during Civil War era plus photos/movies documenting various aspects of history associated with both Confederate / Union Soldier / Garrison life etc.) While several hundred thousand dollars has been invested over many years with no end in sight currently efforts are being made to move all donations back inside university proper where they can remain permanently among other important artifacts now being stored inside Special Collections Building along side original locomotive used for transporting goods wagons filled w/cargo over long distances on two main tracks adjacent TO&E Railway Depot located just off campus

Thomasville is a small town located in the Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1814 by General Robert Ewell Johnston and his family as a post office called "Junction" on the edge of what is now Thomasville. The name was changed to "Thomasville" in 1828 when it became part of Cherokee County. In 1881, Thomasville became an unincorporated community within Cherokee County and ceased to exist as an independent municipality when that county was merged into Wake County. Thomasville is named after General Robert Ewell Johnston, who fought in the American Civil War and died at Appomattox Court House in 1865 while leading Confederate forces against Union forces. Johnston's father also fought in the war and died at Thomasville two years later. Today, some descendants of those early settlers still live in Thomasville and continue to participate actively in local government affairs.
