Weddington is a small town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. Weddington is the only incorporated municipality in Randolph County. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Weddington was founded in 1811 by Captain John Weddington and his wife Hannah Cook as a Cherokee Indian trading post on new land grants that were given to them by Sir Walter Raleigh during his exploratory journey through North Carolina in 1584–85. Captain Weddington's daughter Anna married Drury King, an Englishman who had come to serve as governor of what is now eastern North Carolina in 1729 and was responsible for developing much of present-day Randolph County. In 1800, Drury King designated Weddintona Creek as the "artery" or main water route from Wilmington to Raleigh via Hillsborough and Orange counties; this corridor became known as the "Queen's Highway." In 1811, Captain John Weddington erected a log cabin on Cedar Hill (later Cedar Street) overlooking Cedar Creek where he lived until his death in 1814 at age 79. His widow Hannah continued to live there until her death in 1827 at age 83 years old. Anna wed Drury King's son Colleton King in 1798 and they continued to live there until their deaths in 1830 and 1840 respectively; their children also resided there: James Colleton King (1799–1868), Mary Colleton King (1802–1871), Elizabeth Jane Colleton Kingsbury (1805–1865). After Captains John & Hannah Weddingtons' deaths, ownership of both properties passed down through their descendants until it reverted back to the government on October 22nd 1880 when it was purchased by JB Payne for $5 per acre after he had been appointed Surveyor General for Randolph Co.. On December 20th 1890 Payne sold it back to JB Payne for $10 per acre which increased its value to $120 per acre! The townsite of Weddington was laid out according to a plan prepared by Reverend Wm Henson with help from Lt Colonel York Gilbert who served as surveyor general from 1889-93 under Governor Lowry Easley Governor William Tryon renamedWeddington "Fayetteville" on December 9th 1897 due to efforts made by Congressman Thomas Fenton It should be noted that many people who first moved into this area came from other parts of South Carolina including Camden, Augusta and Columbia which were all booming commercial centers at that time
